The SR-71 was being pushed toward retirement, and it seemed inconceivable that the United States would give up the ability to overfly its enemies at extreme speed and altitude. Observers reported triangular aircraft over the American southwest and the North Sea. In his memoir, Rich flatly denied that a hypersonic Aurora existed.<\/p>\n<p>The word Aurora, he explained, had been a budgetary code name tied to the B-2 bomber program, not a secret spy plane.
