L&#039;8 giugno 1959, il sottomarino Barbero lanci\u00f2 un Regulus la cui testata nucleare era stata sostituita con due contenitori postali contenenti 3.000 lettere. Ventidue minuti dopo, il contenitore atterr\u00f2 in una base navale di Mayport, in Florida. Nel giro di un anno, il sottomarino nucleare George Washington lanci\u00f2 un missile Polaris da una posizione sottomarina, e tutti gli svantaggi del Regulus \u2013 l&#039;emersione, il lancio esposto, la gittata limitata, il deposito munizioni minuscolo \u2013 svanirono all&#039;istante. Il Polaris poteva sparare rimanendo nascosto e non doveva mai mostrarsi.
