For the next fortnight, they train against each other.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion is Falcon Strike 2026, the ninth joint air exercise between the Chinese and Thai air forces and the fifth in a row to be staged on Thai soil. Falcon Strike is where that balancing act becomes visible, with PLAAF jets operating from a Thai base and Thai pilots flying against Chinese tactics.<\/p>\n<p>For Beijing, sending the J-10C abroad is a showcase. The single-engine fighter has become China&rsquo;s headline export, and Pakistan&rsquo;s claims that its J-10Cs downed Indian Rafales in the May 2025 fighting &mdash; claims India has not confirmed &mdash; turned the jet into a talking point far beyond Asia. The Gripen is a light, nimble, sensor-fused fighter designed to fight smart and cheap; the J-10C is a heavier delta with a modern AESA radar and long-range PL-15 missiles. In past Falcon Strike editions, Thai and Chinese crews have traded lessons in beyond-visual-range tactics and within-visual-range dogfighting alike &mdash; and both sides go home having studied the other.<\/p>\n<p>No one will release the real scorecard, and that is rather the point. Exercises like this are less about who &ldquo;wins&rdquo; and more about access: a fortnight of watching how the other side flies, talks and fights.
