It is another to bring it home facing the wrong way.<\/p>\r\n<p>On the morning of Aug. 18, 2026, a Japan Air Self-Defense Force <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-15-eagle\/\">F-15J Eagle<\/a> touched down on Runway 36L at Naha Airport, on the island of Okinawa, and the left main landing gear folded. The jet dropped onto its wingtip and external fuel tank, ground along the concrete in a shower of sparks, then pivoted a full 180 degrees before stopping &mdash; pointing back down the runway it had just landed on. The pilot climbed out unhurt. The airport shares its single active runway with Naha Air Base, home to the 9th Air Wing and its two squadrons of F-15Js standing quick-reaction alert over the East China Sea. When one of those fighters ends up wedged sideways on the concrete, the tourists feel it too.<\/p>\r\n<p>According to Japanese broadcaster NHK, the aircraft was returning from a Quick Reaction Alert mission when the gear let go. (Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">An old Eagle, still on the front line<\/h2>\r\n<p>The F-15J is a licence-built version of the F-15C\/D, assembled in Japan by Mitsubishi. It first flew in 1980 and entered service in 1981, and Japan eventually fielded well over 200 of them. Four decades on, they remain the backbone of the country's air-defense fleet, scrambling day and night against the steady traffic of foreign aircraft probing the edges of Japanese airspace.<\/p>\r\n<p>Tokyo is now spending heavily to keep roughly half of the fleet relevant, with new AESA radar and electronic-warfare upgrades, while the rest are earmarked for replacement by the F-35A. What went wrong with this particular gear leg is exactly what the coming investigation is meant to find out.
