That made it perfect for hunting guerrillas &mdash; and, on paper, useful for defending remote islands.<\/p>\r\n<p>When Argentina seized the Falklands in 1982, around two dozen Pucaras deployed to island airstrips. But the war they found was not the one they were built for. On the night of 14&ndash;15 May 1982, an SAS raiding party slipped onto Pebble Island and destroyed six Pucaras where they stood, along with other aircraft. More were lost to Harrier attacks, naval bombardment and ground fire. It was a grim moment &mdash; but it stands as the only air-to-air victory Argentina achieved in the whole conflict, scored not by a supersonic fighter but by a humble turboprop.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Pucara ended the war mostly as wreckage scattered across captured airfields, and several were shipped to Britain as trophies.
