Lockheed Martin has told Sofia that its production line simply cannot deliver on time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For a country still leaning on Soviet-era jets to guard its skies, a three-year slip is more than a scheduling headache. The news came out of an Aug. 14 meeting between Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov and company representatives, who stressed the revised timeline is not final and that Lockheed will take steps to minimise the delay.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We expect assurances that the delay will not affect the final price of the contract.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Dimitar Stoyanov<\/strong> &mdash; Bulgarian Defence Minister<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That last point matters. The first batch has already arrived, but until the full fleet is in place, the country must keep flying its handful of MiG-29s, jets that are increasingly hard and expensive to keep airworthy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The delay is not really a Bulgarian problem alone. Lockheed&rsquo;s new F-16 line in Greenville, South Carolina, is straining under a global backlog of Block 70\/72 orders from a long list of nations, and Bulgaria is far from the only customer left waiting. The Viper, decades old in concept, has never been more in demand, and that popularity is exactly what is slowing it down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wZ92r9ittcg\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A gap on the map<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>For NATO, Bulgaria sits on a sensitive south-eastern edge, close to the Black Sea and the war in Ukraine. Every year its modern fighters are late is another year its air policing rests on Cold War machines. Sofia will get its Vipers eventually.
