For 35 years the US Navy did it routinely &mdash; with the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, the biggest and heaviest aircraft ever designed for regular carrier operations. The fleet took one look at its bulk and gave it a name that stuck: the Whale.<\/p>\r\n<p>Born as a carrier-based nuclear bomber, the A-3 was Ed Heinemann&rsquo;s gamble that America&rsquo;s atomic bombs would shrink faster than its carriers could grow. He was right. But there was a darker side to the weight-saving genius behind it: to keep the Whale light enough for the deck, the design left out ejection seats entirely. Douglas chief designer Ed Heinemann bet the other way. Reasoning correctly that nuclear weapons would get smaller and lighter, he proposed a far more compact 68,000 lb aircraft that could fly from the Navy&rsquo;s existing Midway-class decks. Heinemann won the contract in 1949.<\/p>\r\n<p>The prototype XA3D-1 first flew on 28 October 1952 under pilot George Jansen, in tight secrecy. Its original Westinghouse J40 engines were a disaster and were swapped for Pratt &amp; Whitney J57s. At roughly 76 feet long with a 72-foot swept wingspan, folding wings and a hinged fin were essential just to fit it below decks. Fully loaded it pushed past 80,000 lb, and in overload tests it set carrier weight records above 84,000 lb.<\/p>\r\n<p>That size cut both ways. It made the Whale a prized deck-hog that flight-deck officers loved to hate, but it also gave the airframe a cavernous fuselage that could swallow almost anything. Instead the crew relied on parachutes and a bail-out chute &mdash; a system that worked poorly exactly when it was needed most, low and fast on launch or recovery. Aircrews joked bleakly that &ldquo;A3D&rdquo; meant &ldquo;All Three Dead.&rdquo;<\/p>\r\n<p>The grim humour had a basis in fact. Of the 282 Whales built, more than 120 &mdash; over 40 percent &mdash; were eventually destroyed or written off in accidents and combat. Skywarriors became KA-3B and EKA-3B tankers, RA-3B photo-reconnaissance platforms, and EA-3B electronic-intelligence aircraft crammed with operators in the old bomb bay &mdash; watching the Cold War&rsquo;s flashpoints and flying over Vietnam.<\/p>\r\n<p>Production ended at El Segundo in January 1961, but the Whale simply refused to retire. EA-3Bs flew signals-intelligence missions right up to Desert Storm, and the last Navy examples were withdrawn on 27 September 1991 &mdash; making it among the longest-serving carrier aircraft in history.
