They counted, and re-counted, and went home convinced the Soviet Union was mass-producing a fleet of aircraft capable of nuking the United States.<\/p><p>They had been played. Many of those bombers were the same handful of aircraft, flying out of sight, looping around, and coming back for another pass. It first flew in 1953, and on paper it was exactly what Moscow wanted: a jet big enough to carry a nuclear bomb from Soviet soil to targets in the United States.<\/p><p>On paper. In reality the Bison had a fatal flaw &mdash; range. It simply could not fly to the American heartland and back. It could threaten some targets on a one-way trip, but as a credible intercontinental deterrent against a country building fleets of <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/b-52-stratofortress\/\">B-52s<\/a>, it fell short. The Soviets knew it. By the most-repeated account, ten Bisons flew past the reviewing stand, disappeared over the horizon, joined up with eight more, and came back for a second pass &mdash; leaving observers to tally 28 aircraft where far fewer existed. From that snapshot, US analysts extrapolated wildly: the CIA estimated the Soviets would field 800 Bisons by 1960.<\/p><p>Historians still argue over whether this was a deliberate deception or simply Western observers fooling themselves. The United States built thousands of B-47s and B-52s and hundreds of KC-135 tankers, partly to close a gap that did not exist.<\/p><p>President Eisenhower was sceptical from the start. Doubting the alarmist estimates, he authorised the aircraft that would settle the question: the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/u-2-dragon-lady\/\">U-2<\/a> spy plane. When it began overflying the Soviet Union in 1956, the truth came quickly. There was no fleet. Most were converted into aerial tankers, and one was rebuilt into the extraordinary VM-T Atlant, a bulbous transport that ferried components of the Buran space shuttle on its back. The bomber that pretended to be a fleet ended its days hauling cargo.<\/p><p>The deeper irony is that the bluff may have backfired. By frightening Washington into a vast, real bomber and missile build-up, the phantom fleet at Tushino helped trigger exactly the arms race it was meant to deter.
