With the airport closed, a Boeing 757 freighter that had been sent around from its approach collided with a second drone; the aircraft came through it and landed safely. It is one of Europe's largest air-freight airports and a regular waypoint for the giant An-124, the type routinely chartered to move oversized military equipment. For Ukraine's supporters, airfields like this are logistics arteries.<\/p>\r\n<p>That, investigators believe, was the point. The working theory is that the drone was meant to cripple aircraft on the ground &mdash; slowing shipments bound for Ukraine and delivering a blunt warning to Berlin about the price of its support. A charge that disables a $100-million freighter on the apron does not need to kill anyone to send its message.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Berlin weighs its response &mdash; Moscow cries &ldquo;pretext&rdquo;<\/h2>\r\n<p>Chancellor Friedrich Merz had already warned in late August that Germany was increasingly &ldquo;in the crosshairs of hybrid attackers,&rdquo; and that those responsible would pay. With the attribution now public, German media reported that the measures under discussion include expelling Russian diplomats and shuttering Russian state-linked sites &mdash; among them Russia's consulate in Bonn and the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin.<\/p>\r\n<p>Brussels is moving in step.
