Foto: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Ventisei giorni<\/h2>\r\n<p>Il primo Boeing 707, con numero di serie VX784, effettu\u00f2 il suo primo volo da Boscombe Down il 4 settembre 1949, pilotato dallo Squadron Leader Samuel Eric &quot;Red&quot; Esler, vice capo collaudatore della Avro, a cui era stata affidata la responsabilit\u00e0 di tutti i voli su quel modello in assenza del capo collaudatore.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ventisei giorni dopo, il 30 settembre, il VX784 si schiant\u00f2 vicino a Blackbushe ed Esler perse la vita. L&#039;indagine indic\u00f2 un sospetto guasto al circuito di controllo che lasci\u00f2 gli aerofreni bloccati in posizione aperta, causando lo stallo dell&#039;aereo.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00c8 opportuno precisare cosa quell&#039;episodio dimostr\u00f2 e cosa non dimostr\u00f2. L&#039;incidente fu ricondotto a un guasto del sistema, non all&#039;ala a delta. Il secondo aereo, il VX790, fu completato secondo uno standard 707B rivisto, con un muso pi\u00f9 lungo, una cappottina diversa, un angolo di freccia di 51 gradi e un carrello anteriore allungato per consentire all&#039;aereo di assumere un angolo maggiore in fase di decollo e atterraggio. Il terzo, il primo 707A, fu impiegato per i velivoli ad alta velocit\u00e0 a partire dalla fine del 1953.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fondamentalmente, il secondo e il terzo aereo volarono prima del Vulcan. Il Vulcan, invece, rimase in servizio per oltre trent&#039;anni e comp\u00ec la missione di bombardamento pi\u00f9 lunga della storia fino a quel momento.
