The Douglas X-3 Stiletto was sixty-seven feet of needle, with a nose you could have used to open letters and wings so small they looked like an afterthought. The J46 did not arrive on schedule, and Douglas ended up bolting in the smaller XJ34 instead &mdash; an engine producing 4,900 lbf with the afterburner lit, against the roughly 7,000 lbf the design had assumed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The result was an aircraft with the drag profile of a dart and the thrust of a trainer. Its take-off run across the Edwards lakebed became notorious; it had to be dragged into the air at around 260 mph, and it chewed through tyres so consistently that it forced a revision of high-speed tyre design standards.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bridgeman worked this out immediately. Photo: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">27 October 1954<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>By 1954 the X-3 had been handed to NACA, and its speed programme had quietly been abandoned. What it was good for now was stability testing &mdash; and it was good for that precisely because of the flaw that ruined it. All its mass sat strung out along a long thin fuselage, with almost nothing out on the wings. That is exactly how the new generation of fighters was being built.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 27 October, NACA pilot Joseph Walker made an abrupt left roll at Mach 0.92 with the rudder held centred. The aircraft rolled as asked, then pitched up twenty degrees and yawed sixteen, thrashing for about five seconds before he caught it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>He did not land. He climbed, dived to Mach 1.154, and did it again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>This time the X-3 pitched down to minus 6.7 g, then up to plus 7 g, sideslipping twenty-one degrees and throwing a 2 g load sideways through the airframe. Walker damped it out and brought it home. Inspection found the fuselage had reached its maximum design limit load. Photo: NACA\/NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why that flight mattered<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>What Walker had ridden through was inertia coupling &mdash; a manoeuvre commanded about one axis producing violent, uncommanded motion about the others. NACA&rsquo;s William H. Phillips had predicted it on paper. Nobody had brought back hard instrumented data from inside it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The timing could not have been sharper. North American F-100A Super Sabres were crashing for reasons nobody could pin down. The X-3 data and the F-100A data were published together in NACA research memorandum RM-H55A13 in February 1955, and the lesson was blunt: long fuselage, small wing, insufficient tail equals trouble. The fix &mdash; more wing, and much more vertical fin &mdash; turned the F-100 from a killer into a usable fighter, and the generous tail surfaces on fighters ever since trace back to it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The X-3&rsquo;s other legacy is visible in a silhouette. Its stubby, razor-thin, low-aspect-ratio wing went almost directly into the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/it\/aerei\/f-104-starfighter\/\">Lockheed F-104 Starfighter<\/a>. A 1964 RAND study concluded that Lockheed could very probably not have flown an F-104 prototype within a year of go-ahead without what the X-3 programme had already learned.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The historians have been less romantic about it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The Douglas X-3, NACA&rsquo;s glamorous hangar queen.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Dr. Richard P. Hallion<\/strong> &mdash; Aerospace historian, later Chief Historian of the U.S. Air Force, in On the Frontier: Flight Research at Dryden, NASA SP-4303 (1984)<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Both things are true. It was a hangar queen, grounded for most of a year after Walker&rsquo;s flight, flown just 51 times in four years, and retired in May 1956 having never come close to its design speed.
