The accompanying text announced the successful drop of an indigenously designed long-range glide bomb called the Khagantak-243.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement contained no range figure, no launch aircraft and no test location. There was no press release from the Press Information Bureau and no statement from DRDO &mdash; because, unusually for an Indian precision weapon, DRDO did not build it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Khagantak comes from JSR Dynamics, a private company in Nagpur, working with the state-owned Bharat Electronics. Nor has the test location; Pokhran appears in some coverage sourced to a defence forum rather than to the Air Force.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most importantly, no range was announced. Every figure now circulating &mdash; 140 km, 144 km, 180 km &mdash; is a brochure or media number, not a measured result from this drop.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The numbers, and which of them to trust<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manufacturer&rsquo;s own specification is the most defensible figure: more than 120 km, released from 12,000 m at Mach 0.85. Indian media have reported 140 km and above, and a figure of 180 km recurs widely. That 180 km appears to have detached itself from a different weapon in the same family &mdash; the lighter K-225-LW &mdash; in reporting from 2020, and then attached itself to the K-243.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The designation causes similar trouble. The K-243 is a 300 kg-class weapon; the number is not its mass. The aircraft that weighs 243 kg is the K-225-LW, and 125 kg is the K-243&rsquo;s explosive fill. At least one outlet has already published it as a &ldquo;125-kilogram glide bomb&rdquo;.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family runs K-243, K-450, K-720 and K-1260, spanning roughly 300 kg to 1,350 kg, with wingspans from three to four metres. Physically the weapon is a slender cylinder with swivelling mid-body wings that deploy after release and five control surfaces at the tail. It is unpowered: everything it achieves it achieves by gliding.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guidance is the part that matters operationally. Mid-course navigation uses multi-constellation satellite navigation coupled to an inertial unit, with jam resistance for satnav-denied conditions &mdash; the specific claim FlightGlobal highlighted. A passive homing head is offered as an option, which would let the weapon hunt radars and electronic-warfare emitters rather than fixed coordinates. According to reporting in the <em>Times of India<\/em>, DRDO contributed ten lakh rupees to the lab after a visit by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Development ran more than twelve years, and the first prototype appeared at Aero India in 2019.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bharat Electronics signed a memorandum of understanding with JSR Dynamics at that same show, on 20 February 2019, covering electronics and guidance subsystems plus production and marketing. At Aero India in February 2025 the company told Janes it had secured an IAF prototype-and-production contract for an undisclosed quantity. The value has not been published. Initial flight tests were expected in mid-2025; this drop, in September 2026, appears to be the delayed maiden air-drop.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two figures circulating in Indian coverage should be treated with suspicion: a claim of more than 1,000 units by 2026, and a claim that the weapon cuts import reliance on smart bombs from over 70 per cent to under 20 per cent. Both trace to a single blog post that places JSR Dynamics in Bangalore rather than Nagpur and describes flight tests in 2021 that Bharat Electronics&rsquo; own 2025 statement contradicts. Neither figure has an official basis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">How it compares with DRDO&rsquo;s own weapon<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obvious comparison is Gaurav, the 1,000 kg-class glide bomb from DRDO&rsquo;s Research Centre Imarat with Armament Research and Development Establishment and others, produced with Adani Defence and Bharat Forge. Less than a third of the mass, further downrange &mdash; because the Khagantak is a slender high-lift glider rather than a bomb body with wings bolted on. The trade is warhead size: Gaurav delivers a far heavier charge.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internationally the closest analogue is not American but Chinese. The LS-6 family spans 50 to 500 kg with ranges from 60 to 120 km depending on variant, and is built on the same idea &mdash; a modular set of glide kits over a standard bomb series. The US AGM-154 JSOW, at roughly 485 kg and about 110 km, is comparable in role.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why India is building these now<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The motivation is not abstract. During Operation Sindoor on 7 May 2025, the Indian Air Force struck targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir using SCALP cruise missiles, Safran HAMMER munitions and Rafael SPICE-2000 bombs. Every one of those weapons was imported.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Khagantak is one of several answers. DRDO&rsquo;s TARA modular glide kit, which converts unguided bombs into precision weapons, had its maiden flight trial on 7 May 2026 from a <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/sepecat-jaguar\/\">Jaguar<\/a> off the Odisha coast. RudraM-II, a long-range anti-radiation missile, was tested from an Su-30MKI on 2 June 2026. A separate 500 kg DRDO guided bomb is awaiting its own Su-30MKI trials.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an irony in the middle of it. Bharat Electronics is building an indigenous glide bomb with JSR Dynamics while simultaneously standing up a joint venture with Safran to produce HAMMER in India.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the honest summary is narrow. A privately designed Indian glide bomb was dropped from an aircraft and hit something, and the Air Force says the trials met all objectives. That is a real milestone and not yet an operational weapon.
