Every day from now on.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Riyadh Air &mdash; the Saudi carrier that did not exist three years ago &mdash; has opened Manila. It is a route that looks, on a network map, like one more dot on an ambitious Asian expansion. It is not. Estimates put the number above a million people &mdash; in healthcare, construction, engineering and domestic work &mdash; and Saudi Arabia is the top source of Philippine remittances in the Middle East.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The scale is easy to underestimate. In 2024, almost 22 per cent of all Filipinos who went abroad for work &mdash; more than 480,000 people in that year alone &mdash; went to Saudi Arabia, a flow driven in no small part by the construction boom under Vision 2030. Traffic runs the other way too: Saudi visitors are one of the Philippines&rsquo; fastest-growing and highest-value tourism markets, worth over $37 million in receipts in 2024, up 46 per cent on the year before.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is what a daily Riyadh-Manila 787 is really carrying: nurses, engineers, site foremen, domestic workers, and the families who go out to visit them or come home for good. Its first commercial flight, to London, operated in June 2026 &mdash; three months ago. Since then the route map has been filled in at a pace that would be reckless if the airline were not backed the way it is: three weekly flights to Malaysia in late July, its first Southeast Asian destination, then Islamabad and Lahore in August, Mumbai, Bangkok on 2 September, Manila on 9 September, Manchester on 19 September. Depart Riyadh at five past one in the morning, land in Manila at four in the afternoon. Turn around in ninety minutes. Leave Manila at 17:25, arrive back in Riyadh at 22:15.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is a schedule optimised for connections at the Riyadh end and for a single daily aircraft rotation, not for the comfort of a leisure traveller. A 01:05 departure is what you build when your passengers are arriving off other flights and your aeroplane needs to be somewhere else by tomorrow morning. The ninety-minute turn at Manila is aggressive for a widebody and tells you the aircraft is worth more in the air than on a stand at NAIA.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For Manila, it is another international carrier on an airport network that has been steadily adding them. For Riyadh Air, it is a large, dependable, year-round market that does not depend on tourism campaigns or seasonal demand. People go to work, and people come home.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Whether the airline can hold the route against the established Gulf carriers, who have been carrying this traffic through Dubai and Doha for decades, is the question.
