A figure of 71.4 million euros appears in reporting, but sources differ on whether it refers to this agreement or an earlier order<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why a laser, and why now<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>A one-way attack drone of the Shahed class costs somewhere in the tens of thousands of dollars. The surface-to-air missile that reliably kills it costs hundreds of thousands, sometimes more. An opponent who can build drones faster than you can build interceptors wins that exchange even when every single engagement succeeds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>A laser inverts it. The weapon consumes electricity rather than ordnance, so the marginal cost of an engagement collapses towards the price of running a generator.
