The number alone is remarkable. What they chose to buy is more telling: the most ordered category is no longer the FPV kamikaze drone that defined this war. It is the interceptor, a drone built to shoot down other drones.

Ukraine's Ministry of Defence released the figures on 25 September. They show a front line where the fight for the air is increasingly being waged by small, cheap unmanned aircraft hunting each other, from the Russian reconnaissance drones spotting for artillery to the Shahed-type attack drones launched at Ukrainian cities.

Quick Facts

Total ordered: More than 590,000 UAVs, January to September 2026

Platform: Brave1 Market, Ukraine's defence procurement marketplace

Most ordered: Interceptor drones, against reconnaissance drones and Shahed-type attack drones

Second: Copter-type FPV kamikaze drones

Fastest growth: Fixed-wing kamikaze drones, at peak six times the January order level

Biggest spend: Bomber drones

Trend: Average monthly order value more than doubled since January

Announced: Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, 25 September 2026

Interceptors Overtake the FPV

According to the ministry, interceptor drones were the most frequently ordered category, covering both types designed to counter reconnaissance drones and specialised "anti-Shahed" interceptors. Copter-type FPV kamikaze drones, the weapon that became the symbol of this war, came second.

The fastest growth was in fixed-wing kamikaze drones: at their peak, units were ordering six times as many as at the start of the year. In money terms, the most went on bomber drones, the heavier multirotors that drop munitions on positions and vehicles. Mothership drones, which carry smaller drones deep behind the front before releasing them, are among the most expensive segments.

A soldier of Ukraine's 118th Mechanized Brigade prepares a Sting interceptor drone. Units earn points, called e-Points, for completed combat missions: confirmed hits on targets, reconnaissance, and robotic logistics or evacuation. They can then exchange those points for drones, unmanned ground vehicles and electronic warfare systems from Ukrainian manufacturers.

The model puts buying decisions close to the troops who use the equipment, and the order data reflects what they actually need. According to AeroTime, June 2026 was the biggest month so far, with orders worth more than UAH 5 billion (about $111 million), and average delivery time for stocked items fell to eight days.

Why Interceptors Are Winning the Order Book

Russia launches Shahed-type attack drones at Ukraine in large numbers, and shooting them down with surface-to-air missiles costs far more than the drones themselves. Interceptor drones such as the Sting change that equation: a small, fast drone that rams or detonates near its target costs a fraction of a missile.

The same logic applies at the front, where Russian reconnaissance drones find targets for artillery and glide bombs. Knocking them down with a drone is cheaper than any alternative, which is why interceptors now top the list. Ukraine's SPART interceptor and the Sting are examples of a category that has grown rapidly since 2025.

Aviation analyst Xavier Tytelman looks at the Sting, the Ukrainian interceptor drone built to take on the Shahed.

For air forces watching from outside, the lesson is uncomfortable.
