Before it, a crew that sees a fire warning or loses an engine can pull the thrust levers back and stop on the runway. After it, the same crew must keep going and take the problem into the air. That moment has a name, and the pilot not flying calls it out loud on almost every departure: "Vee one."

V1 is the most misunderstood number in the cockpit. It is usually translated as "decision speed," and even the official training material says that label is misleading. Here is what it really means, and why the few crews who get it wrong so often end up in the grass beyond the runway.

Quick Facts

V1: The maximum speed at which the crew can start a rejected take-off and still stop on the runway

VR: Rotation speed, when the pilot starts to raise the nose

V2: Take-off safety speed, reached by 35 ft with one engine out

How often: About one rejected take-off per 3,000 take-offs (FAA and Boeing data)

Low speed: Over 75% of rejected take-offs start at or below 80 knots

High speed: About 2% start above 120 knots

The risk: Of 97 RTO overrun accidents and incidents studied, 55% were started above V1

What V1 Actually Is

For a large jet, V1 is calculated before every flight from the weight, the runway length, the wind, the temperature, the runway slope and surface, and the flap setting. It has two jobs.

First, it is the highest speed at which the crew can begin a rejected take-off and still bring the aircraft to a stop within the runway that remains. Second, it is the lowest speed from which the aircraft can lose an engine and still continue, lift off and reach 35 feet above the runway by the end of the available distance. On a runway that is exactly long enough, the two limits meet at a single speed. Engineers call that a balanced field.

How V1 divides the take-off run. The brakes absorb so much energy that fuse plugs in the wheels melt to let the tyres deflate rather than explode. Small brake fires are acceptable, as long as they do not endanger the aircraft during the first five minutes, before fire crews are allowed to help.

Airbus flight test crews explain the maximum-energy braking test. Video: Airbus.

Why Crews Reject Low and Fast

Airline procedures split the take-off roll in two. Below roughly 80 knots, a crew will reject for almost any problem, because stopping is easy. Between 80 knots and V1, they only stop for serious failures such as an engine failure, a fire or anything that makes the aircraft unsafe to fly. A caution light or an odd noise is not enough.

The numbers show why. According to the FAA and Boeing Takeoff Safety Training Aid, the western-built jet fleet had made about 430 million take-offs by the end of 2003, with roughly one rejected take-off every 3,000 departures. More than 75 percent of those were started at 80 knots or less, and they almost never ended in an accident. Only about 2 percent were started above 120 knots, but that is where nearly all the trouble came from.

An Airbus A350 lined up for take-off. Fifty-five percent were started above V1. About a third happened on wet or contaminated runways. And only about one fifth were caused by engine failures or engine warnings. The rest were started for tyre failures, warning lights, noises, vibrations and other problems that did not, in most cases, stop the aircraft from flying.

“The Go/No Go decision must be made before reaching V1.”
FAA and Boeing, Takeoff Safety Training Aid — on the timing of the Go/No Go decision

That is the heart of it. A late stop above V1 on a field-length-limited runway leaves the aircraft going too fast with too little concrete left. The crew may do everything else right and still overrun. There are rare exceptions, such as a jammed flight control that means the aircraft genuinely cannot fly, where stopping after V1 is the least bad choice. But the default is simple. Once you hear "Vee one," your hands come off the thrust levers and you go.

A rejected take-off seen from the flight deck in 360 degrees, from a training session. Video: Mentour Pilot.

What It Means for Passengers

If you have ever felt an airliner accelerate hard, then suddenly slam on its brakes with the engines roaring in reverse, you have been through a rejected take-off. It is loud and dramatic, but it is exactly what the procedure is designed to do, and it almost always ends with a slow taxi back to the gate.

Sources: FAA and Boeing Takeoff Safety Training Aid; Wikipedia (Rejected takeoff, Balanced field takeoff); Boeing; Airbus; Mentour Pilot.
