It is going to Mojave. It is going to have a hypersonic vehicle bolted under it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Stratolaunch announced the purchase on 30 September 2026. The jet, previously flown by Air New Zealand, will be converted in-house into a carrier aircraft for the Talon-A hypersonic test vehicle, with the work finished and the aeroplane in service some time in 2027. That gives the company three carrier aircraft and, by its own arithmetic, about 35 per cent more flight capacity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The interesting part is not the aeroplane. Getting a research vehicle to altitude and a useful starting speed is the expensive, boring part of the flight, and an aeroplane does it for the price of jet fuel. Hang the vehicle under a wing or a fuselage, climb, drop it, and the rocket motor only has to do the interesting bit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is how the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/north-american-x-15\/\">X-15<\/a> worked, carried under the wing of a modified <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/b-52-stratofortress\/\">B-52<\/a> and released at around 45,000 feet. Stratolaunch is doing the same thing with a reusable vehicle and a commercial airframe, and describes the carrier aircraft in exactly those terms: a reusable first stage. Roc is magnificent and almost impossible to operate casually: twin fuselages, six engines, the largest wingspan of any aeroplane ever flown, and a very short list of runways that can take it. A 777 can go almost anywhere, be maintained by almost anyone, and be dispatched without a planning exercise. Spirit of Mojave is a Boeing 747-400 that flew as Cosmic Girl for Virgin Orbit, carrying the LauncherOne rocket on a pylon under its port wing. Virgin Orbit filed for bankruptcy in April 2023. Stratolaunch does not build carrier aircraft any more; it buys airliners and converts them. Roc was a bespoke machine from a bespoke era, built when the plan was orbital launch and the money came from a Microsoft co-founder. The company that exists now sells test flights to the Pentagon, and test flights are a volume business.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9xTvKx5uCKg\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin:-14px 0 26px;font-style:italic\">Stratolaunch&rsquo;s own film of the TA-2 vehicle&rsquo;s first recoverable hypersonic flight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Ten flights and a government that wants more<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Talon-A is autonomous, reusable and rocket-powered, and it is the thing all three aeroplanes exist to carry. In July 2026 Stratolaunch announced it had passed ten successful hypersonic flights with the platform. In February 2026 it announced a 90.8 million dollar award under the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed, the programme the US Test Resource Management Center uses to buy flight-test capacity on behalf of the services.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those two numbers explain the 777 better than any press release does. A programme that flies occasionally does not need three carrier aircraft. A programme being paid to deliver a schedule does, because a single aeroplane in maintenance is a schedule that has stopped.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Stratolaunch also says the 777 will let it run missions in parallel and operate from more places. That is the part worth watching. Hypersonic test ranges are scarce, heavily booked and geographically awkward, and an operator who can take the range to the customer rather than the customer to the range has an advantage that does not show up in a specification table.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9UYj6jOXDV8\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin:-14px 0 26px;font-style:italic\">Where it started: the TA-1 vehicle&rsquo;s first flight, released from Roc.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What we do not know<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Stratolaunch has not published the registration or serial of the 777, what it paid, or how the Talon-A will be carried on an airframe that was not designed with a hard point. The press material says the vehicle will be launched from the fuselage, which on a 777 is not a trivial piece of engineering. Neither has the company said which of the three aircraft will be used for which customers, or whether Roc remains the primary carrier.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What is clear is the direction. A decade ago Stratolaunch was a plan to put satellites in orbit using the largest aeroplane ever built.
