He fell for her, he later wrote, &ldquo;almost from the moment I saw her&rdquo;, and quickly realised that this &ldquo;down-to-earth Scottish lady&rdquo; would not be impressed by his usual antics.<\/p>\r\n<p>By Branson&rsquo;s own account, the idea for Virgin Atlantic came on the way to see her. At 28 he was flying to the British Virgin Islands to be reunited with Joan when his flight was cancelled at the last minute. He hired a plane, wrote &ldquo;Virgin Airways: $39 single flight&rdquo; on a blackboard and filled the seats with the other bumped passengers.<\/p>\r\n<p>The couple had two children, Holly and Sam, and married on Necker Island in 1989. In 2021, the year Eve Branson died at 96, Virgin named an Airbus A350-1000 Fearless Lady in honour of Richard&rsquo;s mother, a former airline hostess. It flies as G-VEVE.<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2024, the airline&rsquo;s 40th year, a new A330neo named Ruby Rebel (G-VSRB) saluted Richard himself. The airline&rsquo;s jets have long carried a pin-up figure with a Union flag near the nose, and in 2019 Virgin began introducing a wider cast of &lsquo;Flying Icons&rsquo;, starting with the A350. Some names carry memories, too: Virgin says two of them, Forever Young and Olivia-Rae, remember &ldquo;colleagues who are no longer with us&rdquo;.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Jet Beneath the Art<\/h2>\r\n<p>Under the artwork is a working long-hauler. The A330-900 is the larger of the two versions of Airbus&rsquo;s re-engined A330neo, and Virgin&rsquo;s fly on two Rolls-Royce Trent 7000s. In 2019 Virgin became the first UK airline to order the type, and it took delivery of its first in Toulouse in October 2022.<\/p>\r\n<p>Viva Forever arrives as Virgin brings ten new A330neos into its fleet from the third quarter of 2026, each with an expanded premium cabin and six Retreat Suites.
