On the evening of 2 October 2026, Poland's Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that the country's FA-50GF light fighters had finally entered combat duty, standing quick-reaction alert to defend the eastern border.

"Extremely important news!" he wrote on X. The twelve South Korean-built jets were bought without weapons in 2022, a decision that left them grounded for real-world missions. Poland has since sourced the missiles and ammunition separately, and the jets are now cleared to scramble.

The announcement came one day after another milestone: the arrival at Łask of Poland's ninth F-35A, the first one assembled in Italy rather than Texas.

Quick Facts

Aircraft: KAI FA-50GF Fighting Eagle (Block 10)

Number: 12, based at the 23rd Tactical Air Base, Mińsk Mazowiecki

Milestone: Entered combat duty (quick reaction alert), announced 2 October 2026

Weapons: AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and 20mm cannon ammunition, acquired after delivery

Main role: Countering airspace threats, including combat drones

Next variant: 36 FA-50PL on order

Also this week: Ninth Polish F-35A (tail 3517), the first assembled at Cameri, Italy, arrived at Łask on 1 October 2026

Light fighters, finally armed

Poland ordered 48 FA-50s from Korea Aerospace Industries in 2022, in a hurry, after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The first twelve were the FA-50GF "gap filler" version, delivered quickly from late 2022, with 36 of the more capable FA-50PL to follow.

The catch was that the gap fillers arrived without a combat weapons package. As the minister acknowledged in his announcement, the jets were bought unarmed, and they served mainly as lead-in trainers. According to Polish defence media, Poland has since obtained AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and a stock of 20mm ammunition for the internal cannon.

With weapons in hand, the twelve jets at the 23rd Tactical Air Base in Mińsk Mazowiecki, east of Warsaw, have joined Poland's quick reaction alert roster, the NATO system of armed fighters kept ready to launch within minutes against unidentified aircraft.

“The FA-50GF will be used primarily to counter potential threats, including combat drones.”
Gen. It is no F-35, but that is the point. For intercepting slow drones, escorting stray light aircraft or simply showing up quickly, a cheaper jet saves flight hours on the frontline F-16s and F-35s.

Poland has had plenty of reasons to keep fighters on alert. Russian drones have strayed into Polish airspace repeatedly during the war in Ukraine, and NATO allies have rotated fighters through Poland to help guard the border.

Husarz number nine, made in Italy

Meanwhile, at the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask, the Polish Air Force's F-35 fleet grew to nine. The new jet, tail number 3517, arrived on 1 October and is the first Polish F-35A assembled at Leonardo's Final Assembly and Check-Out facility in Cameri, near Milan, where it first flew on 22 July 2026.
