The claim first appeared on the X account French Aid to Europe, and Ukraine’s Air Force had not confirmed it. Whether or not it holds up, it is a reminder that pilots still value a gun.

Sixty years ago, one of the most important fighters of the Cold War went to war without one. The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II was designed around missiles alone. Vietnam forced the US Air Force to bolt guns onto it, and then to build one into the nose. This is how that happened.

Quick Facts

Aircraft: McDonnell F-4 Phantom II, two-seat fighter

Original armament: Air-to-air missiles only, no internal cannon

First fix: External gun pods with a 20mm M61A1 Vulcan, such as the SUU-16 and later the SUU-23

Lasting fix: F-4E with an internal 20mm M61A1 Vulcan under the nose

F-4E first flight: 30 June 1967; first delivery to the USAF in October 1967

US Navy: Navy Phantoms never received an internal gun

Vietnam record: F-4 crews credited with 150 and a half MiG kills for 42 Phantoms lost in air combat

Why the F-4 Had No Gun

The F-4 was conceived in the 1950s as a fleet defence interceptor for the US Navy. Like other interceptors of its day, it was designed without an internal cannon. The thinking was that radar-guided and heat-seeking missiles would destroy bombers and fighters at long range, long before a dogfight could develop.

The AIM-7 Sparrow and the AIM-9 Sidewinder were meant to be the whole story. On paper the Phantom could detect an enemy beyond visual range, fire a Sparrow, and never see the target it destroyed.

Smithsonian Channel on the F-4 Phantom being put to the test in Vietnam.

What Vietnam Did to the Theory

Combat over North Vietnam did not look like the theory. Rules of engagement usually required pilots to identify a target visually before firing, which ruled out most long-range Sparrow shots. The missiles of the time were also frequently reported as unreliable, and crews often had to fire several to destroy one enemy fighter.

Once a fight closed to short range against nimble MiG-17 and MiG-21 fighters, a Phantom crew with no gun had nothing to fall back on if the missiles missed, failed or were too close to arm.

“Bullets are cheap and tend to go where you aim them.”
John Chesire — Former US Air Force F-4 pilot, quoted by Stephen Joiner (2015)

Chesire called the lack of an internal gun the biggest mistake on the F-4, and added that he needed a gun and really wished he had one. US Air Force F-4Cs began carrying the SUU-16 external gun pod, which contained a 20mm M61A1 Vulcan rotary cannon, on the centreline station. By 1967 armourers in Vietnam were loading pods like it for combat missions, and later aircraft used the improved SUU-23.

Two F-4Cs of the 558th Tactical Fighter Squadron return to Cam Ranh Air Base in December 1968. The lead aircraft, 64-0749, carries a SUU-16 gun pod and Mk 82 Snakeye bombs. US Air Force photo, public domain

The pods worked, but not well. USAF cockpits had no lead-computing gunsight until the SUU-23 era, so aiming was difficult, and combat showed that the externally mounted cannon was inaccurate unless it was frequently boresighted. A pod also took up a weapons station and added drag.

A YRF-4C prototype fires a gun pod during testing at Edwards Air Force Base. It carried an internally mounted 20mm M61A1 Vulcan under a lengthened nose, together with an improved fire-control system. The F-4E made its first flight on 30 June 1967, and the first aircraft was delivered to the US Air Force in October 1967. By January 1969 the first F-4Es had been sent to Southeast Asia, and many more deployed in April 1972 for the Constant Guard operations.

The F-4E went on to become the most numerous Phantom variant and the backbone of many air forces abroad, including Israel’s, whose F-4Es fought in 1973. The US Navy took a different path. Navy Phantoms never received an internal gun, and the service focused instead on training its crews to fight with missiles, most famously through the Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun.

TJ3 History on lesser-known facts about the F-4 Phantom.

The Lesson That Stuck

The US Air Force fighters designed after Vietnam, from the F-15 and F-16 to the F-22, all carry an internal gun. We explained how the most common of those guns works in our guide to the M61 Vulcan. Missiles have become far more reliable since the 1960s, but the Phantom’s experience left air forces unwilling to send a fighter into combat with nothing in reserve.

That is why a claim like the Mirage cannon kill gets attention. If it is confirmed, it would show the same logic at work in 2026: when missiles are scarce or the target is close, a gun is still the cheapest weapon on the aircraft.

Sources: Wikipedia, McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II (citing Stephen Joiner, 2015); GlobalSecurity.org, F-4E Phantom II; US Air Force photo captions via Wikimedia Commons; Militarnyi, early October 2026

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
Why did the F-4 Phantom not have a gun?

The F-4 Phantom II was designed in the 1950s as a missile-armed interceptor.
