Residents of Rog\u00e9ville, north-west of Nancy, heard a detonation that shook their windows and saw a ball of orange fire light up the night.<\/p>\n<p>By Wednesday morning, searchers had found one of the two crew members dead. As of the latest official statements and French media reports, the second airman, the jet&rsquo;s weapon systems officer, was still being searched for. The crew had flown a night training mission, the kind the base runs every week, and were on the return leg when radio and radar contact was lost, according to the Air and Space Force.<\/p>\n<p>Base commander Colonel Ludovic Humbert told reporters on Wednesday morning that the aircraft was on final approach to Ochey and that weather conditions were &ldquo;not really optimal&rdquo;. He added that the jet had been renovated fairly recently and had no reliability problems.<\/p>\n<p>The crew paired youth with experience. The pilot, 27, was a trainee with about 450 flight hours, in the process of qualifying as an operational combat pilot, according to Air and Space Force spokesperson Colonel David Pappalardo. A command post was set up at the entrance to Rog\u00e9ville.<\/p>\n<p>Prefect Yves S\u00e9guy said night, fog and very poor weather made it impossible to send a helicopter over the area at first, so the initial search was carried out on foot, supported by a drone.
