In 1976 the company behind the SF.260 piston trainer started work on one anyway, as a private venture, betting that the air forces already flying its propeller aircraft would want a cheap, modern jet to follow it.

The bet produced the SIAI-Marchetti S.211: a compact two-seater with a single Pratt & Whitney Canada turbofan and an airframe built largely of composites. It first flew on 10 April 1981. Only about 60 were built, and yet the design outlived its maker, flew armed for the Philippines and still exists today in its grandchild, the Aermacchi M-345.

Quick Facts

Type: Two-seat basic jet trainer with light-attack capability

Manufacturer: SIAI-Marchetti, later Aermacchi (from 1997)

First flight: 10 April 1981

Engine: One Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-4C, 2,500 lbf

Production: About 60 aircraft

Military operators: Singapore, Philippines, Haiti

Hardpoints: Four underwing

Successors: Aermacchi M-311, then M-345

A trainer nobody ordered

SIAI-Marchetti announced the programme in Paris in 1977. Customer interest was reportedly strong enough to justify two prototypes, and the first of them flew on 10 April 1981. Aeropedia, the Australian aircraft encyclopedia, records that three prototypes were eventually built.

The engineering brief was simple: keep it small, keep it light and keep the running costs close to those of a turboprop. The answer was a shoulder-wing monoplane with tandem seats, the rear cockpit raised above the front one so the instructor can see over the student. Kevlar, Nomex and carbon fibre make up much of the structure, with extensive use of structural bonding.

Power came from a single Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-4C turbofan of 2,500 lbf, the same engine family that powers Cessna Citation business jets. The aircraft was fully aerobatic, and four underwing hardpoints gave it a secondary role in close air support, carrying gun pods, rockets or light bombs.

The rest of the aircraft was conventional and deliberately simple. Primary flight controls use manual push-pull rods, while the landing gear, air brake and boosted ailerons are hydraulic, working at 3,000 psi. Both crew sit on Martin-Baker Mk 10 zero-zero ejection seats. Aeropedia gives a maximum speed of 667 km/h at 20,000 ft, a service ceiling of 40,000 ft and a range on internal fuel of 1,668 km with a 30-minute reserve: respectable numbers for a jet with an empty weight of about 1.8 tonnes.

The second S.211 prototype, I-SIJF, in its brown and tan colour scheme, preserved indoors at the Volandia museum near Milan Malpensa. According to the RSAF's own history, it bought 30 S-211s from Italy in November 1983 and received the first one on 30 November 1984. The new jets began replacing 130 Squadron's ageing Strikemasters and T-33s, and the S-211s flew in formation with the T-33s on the older type's final flight in 1986.

Singapore eventually operated 32, most of them assembled locally by Singapore Aircraft Industries, including two former Haitian aircraft bought as attrition replacements. The training was flown in Australia, and from 1996 the RSAF Flight Training School operated at RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia.

The Pilatus PC-21 replaced the S-211 from the end of 2008. Four Singaporean airframes went home for museums and instruction, and 21 were sold in 2009 to the IAP Group in Australia. Many of those ended up on the Australian civil register, which is one reason the type survives in private hands today.

ForeFlight visits Victory Aviation to show how a civilian pilot can learn to fly a privately owned S-211.

Haiti and the Philippines

The smallest customer was Haiti. Four aircraft were delivered in June 1985, and Wikipedia records that they were retired and put up for sale on 23 April 1990. Ex-Haitian airframes resurfaced in Singapore and later in the United States, where FlightGlobal reported in 2006 that a civilian company was still flying two of them.

The Philippine Air Force became the type's longest-serving military user. It received at least 25 aircraft, including one partially completed airframe for spares, and 15 of them were assembled locally by the Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation. In service they became AS-211 Warriors, trainers with a real secondary combat job.

A grey Philippine Air Force AS.211, tail number 008, at Clark Air Base during Exercise Cope Thunder on 4 May 2023. With no other jet combat aircraft left, the AS-211 had to cover air defence too. A series of local programmes under the name Project Falcon fitted the Norsight optical sight and AN/ARC-34 UHF radios taken from the retired F-5s, a two-tone grey low-visibility paint scheme, and a belly gun pod built by Aerotech Industries Philippines with a single .50-calibre M3 machine gun and about 240 rounds.

Keeping them flying was hard work. In February 2006 FlightGlobal reported that the air force had only four S211s operating out of an inventory of 18, and that its chief called them costly to operate. Parts support came from Aerodef Asia, which had bought Aermacchi's stock of S211 spares and told the magazine it could support the fleet for at least another ten years.

“Without the S211 we have problems with our fighter pilots. The S-211 went back to what it was built for, and in March 2025 the air force's spokesperson described it as the first aircraft a new pilot meets at the fighter wing, with maritime patrol as a secondary task. Defense Mirror, citing the Philippine News Agency, reported that only three or four remained in use after the FA-50PH deliveries, and that the air force was already studying a replacement.

“The S211s, that’s their entry level when you get to the fighter wing and you want to become a fighter pilot — the first aircraft that you have to fly are our S211s,”
Col. An updated S-211A, developed first with Grumman and later with Northrop Grumman, entered the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System competition for the US Air Force and Navy. Seven aircraft competed, and the Raytheon and Pilatus entry won, becoming the T-6 Texan II.

In 1997 rival Italian manufacturer Aermacchi bought SIAI-Marchetti, and with it the S.211. In 2004 Aermacchi announced an improved version, the M-311, with a new cockpit, more composites, structural changes and the JT15D-5C engine. The first M-311 prototype flew on 1 June 2005.

In 2012 the design was revised again and renamed the M-345 HET, for High Efficiency Trainer, and in 2014 the Williams FJ44-4M turbofan was chosen to replace the Pratt & Whitney engine. The Leonardo M-345 first flew on 29 December 2016 and entered service with the Italian Air Force in December 2020, replacing the MB-339. A private-venture trainer from the late 1970s had become the basic jet of a major NATO air force.

An Italian-registered civil S.211, I-MJET, takes off from Neuburg air base in Bavaria.

Why the S.211 still flies

Retirement turned out to be the type's second career. Small, economical and simple compared with Cold War jet trainers, ex-military S.211s found buyers among private operators in Australia, the United States and Europe. Wikipedia counts fifteen former Singaporean aircraft on the Australian civil register.

In Germany, MiGFlug offers S.211 jet flights from Augsburg near Munich, priced at 3,850 euros, with access to a military training area and aerobatics over the Bavarian Alps. It is one of the few places where a civilian can sit in the back of the jet that a small Italian firm built on a hunch, and feel why air forces relied on it for decades.

A complete S-211 sortie from the cockpit, from engine start through stalls to landing.

Sources: Wikipedia, Republic of Singapore Air Force, FlightGlobal, Daily Tribune, Defense Mirror, Aeropedia, Volandia, DVIDS, MiGFlug

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
When did the SIAI-Marchetti S.211 first fly?

The SIAI-Marchetti S.211 first flew on 10 April 1981.
