It builds both of the fifth-generation jets the U.S. flies today: the air-superiority F-22 Raptor and the multirole F-35 Lightning II, the most-produced Western fighter of the century. It also still turns out F-16s from a line in Greenville, South Carolina. If you saw an American stealth fighter between 2005 and 2025, Lockheed built it.

Which is exactly why what happened next was such a shock.

Boeing - the comeback

Boeing's combat-aircraft business had been living on updated Cold War designs: the F-15, now sold as the F-15EX Eagle II, and the F/A-18 Super Hornet, plus the T-7 trainer and MQ-25 tanker drone. The company had struggled badly with its KC-46 tanker and T-7 programmes, and many assumed it had lost the will - or the ability - to build a frontline fighter.

Then, in March 2025, the U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing the contract for the F-47, America's first crewed sixth-generation fighter, in a deal worth more than 20 billion dollars. It beat Lockheed. Northrop had already dropped out. Overnight, Boeing was back at the very top of the fighter business.

Boeing's F-15EX Eagle II - a modernised descendant of the 1970s Eagle. But today Northrop has effectively left fighters behind. It withdrew from the sixth-generation NGAD competition in 2023 to concentrate on what it does better than anyone: big flying wings. It builds the Spirito B-2 and its successor, the B-21 Raider, the most important American aircraft programme of the decade.

The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider. General Atomics - long known for the MQ-9 Reaper - and the defence-tech start-up Anduril have both been chosen to build the U.S. Air Force's first Collaborative Combat Aircraft: semi-autonomous "loyal wingman" jets designed to fly alongside crewed fighters. Their FQ-42 "Dark Merlin" and FQ-44 "Fury" are already rolling off production lines, at roughly a third of the price of a crewed fighter.

That is the real change. The club that builds America's warplanes, closed for decades, has just admitted two new members - and they build robots.

“We recognize the importance of designing, building a sixth-generation fighter capability for the United States Air Force.”
Steve Parker — interim CEO, Boeing Defense, Space & Security

Why the map is shifting

Put it together and the picture is of an industry in genuine flux. Lockheed no longer has a monopoly on stealth fighters. Boeing has clawed its way back to the front. Northrop has bet its future on bombers. And a new tier of companies is building the cheap, autonomous jets that will fly alongside all of them. The F-47 is expected to fly around 2028, teamed with drones from firms that did not build aircraft at all a decade ago.

The next time someone asks who builds America's warplanes, the honest answer is no longer a single name. It is a shifting alliance of old giants and new upstarts - and, for the first time in a long time, nobody is quite sure who will be on top when the dust settles.

Sources: U.S. Air Force; Defense News; The War Zone; Breaking Defense; Simple Flying.

Post correlati

L'aquila che sopravvisse al suo stesso successore

America's First Fighter Drones Roll Off the Line

For most of the last thirty years, the answer to “who builds America’s fighter jets?” was almost boringly simple.
