Not because his aim was bad — because something invisible had grabbed the falling bombs and thrown them sideways across the city.

The B-29 Superfortress crews over Japan that morning had just flown into a river of air moving faster than any wind they had ever heard of — a 200-mile-an-hour torrent at exactly the altitude they were trying to bomb from. Nobody in those cockpits had a name for it. Today we call it the jet stream, and the first people in the West to truly meet it were American bomber crews who lost a battle to it before they understood what it was.

Quick Facts

Aircraft: Boeing B-29 Superfortress (and its F-13 photo-recon variant)

First recon over Tokyo: 1 November 1944, Capt. It was an F-13, the photo-reconnaissance version of the Superfortress, flown by Captain Ralph Steakley. It was the first Allied aircraft over Tokyo since Jimmy Doolittle’s carrier raid in April 1942, and it spent more than half an hour circling serenely above a city that could not touch it.

Japanese Nakajima Ki-44 interceptors clawed for altitude and never got within a kilometre of him. Steakley’s crew brought home some 7,000 photographs of factories and docks — the target folder for the entire coming campaign. They nicknamed the aircraft “Tokyo Rose,” after the English-language propaganda broadcasts that answered the overflight with a threat.

“Sixty hours after the first bombs drop on Tokyo, there won’t be an American alive on Saipan.”
Radio Tokyo broadcast — English-language propaganda, November 1944

The reconnaissance flight mattered enormously; it handed the bomber force the intelligence its entire offensive would be built on. In three weeks, 111 bombers would fly straight into it.

The 200 mph wind that wasn’t on any map

Operation San Antonio I launched on 24 November 1944: 111 B-29s of the 73rd Bombardment Wing lifting off from Saipan to bomb the Nakajima Aircraft Company’s Musashino plant, the factory building engines for much of Japan’s air force. The plan was textbook US doctrine — high-altitude daylight precision bombing, the same faith in the Norden bombsight that had been preached since the 1930s.

Then the formations reached the target and the doctrine fell apart. Over Japan in winter, the jet stream blows from the west at 200 to 250 miles an hour, and it sits at roughly the same 30,000-foot band the B-29s bombed from. Aircraft running with the wind shot across the target at ground speeds well over 445 mph, giving bombardiers almost no time to aim. Those bombing into the wind hung nearly motionless, perfect targets for flak. And crosswind runs simply scattered bombs downwind across the city.

Of the 111 bombers that set out, only about two dozen managed to put bombs anywhere near the Musashino plant, and the damage was trivial. For the crews of the 73rd, it was a bitter, baffling anticlimax. They had crossed 1,500 miles of ocean to be beaten by the weather.

A B-29 lets go over Japan in 1945. At 30,000 feet the jet stream turned careful bomb runs into guesswork. Photo: U.S. Army Air Forces via Wikimedia Commons

Run after run through the winter of 1944–45 told the same story. The most powerful bomber in the world, flying the most advanced bombing tactics America had, kept missing Japan because it was fighting a wind that science had barely named.

The man who already knew

Here is the twist: the jet stream was not truly undiscovered. A Japanese meteorologist named Wasaburo Oishi had been tracking these ferocious high-altitude winds from an observatory near Mount Tsukuba since the 1920s, releasing pilot balloons and watching them tear off to the east. He published his findings — but he wrote them in Esperanto, the would-be universal language, and almost no one outside Japan ever read them.

So while American aircrews were being humbled by a wind they had no name for, Japan had understood it for two decades — and had weaponised it. From late 1944, Japan launched thousands of Fu-Go balloon bombs, riding that same eastbound jet stream across the Pacific toward North America. Both sides were flying in the same invisible river; one side had simply read the map.

A recovered Japanese Fu-Go balloon bomb, reinflated for study. Japan rode the jet stream that baffled the B-29 crews to loft these across the Pacific. Photo: U.S. Navy via Wikimedia Commons

How a wind changed the war

The jet stream did more than embarrass a few bomb runs; it broke a doctrine. High-altitude daylight precision bombing, the whole premise of the American air campaign, simply did not work over Japan. In January 1945, General Curtis LeMay took over and made a brutal decision: come down low, fly at night, drop the pretence of precision, and burn Japan’s cities with incendiaries. The firebombing of Tokyo in March 1945 was the direct result.

It is a strange, sobering thread of history. A weather phenomenon a Japanese scientist had quietly measured in Esperanto helped push the air war toward the firestorms — and, that August, toward the two B-29s that would carry a new kind of weapon to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Superfortress would end the war. But first, over Tokyo, it had to lose a fight with the sky itself.

Sources: Wikipedia (1 November 1944 reconnaissance sortie over Japan; Operation San Antonio; XXI Bomber Command); U.S. Army Air Forces official histories; Air & Space Forces Magazine; SOFREP.

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

The B-29’s Pressurised Crawl Tunnel: 1940s Engineering Genius

The B-29 That Almost Came Home

Share this story On 24 November 1944, a bombardier lay over his bombsight five and a half miles above Tokyo, cross-hairs settled on the Nakajima engine works, and watched his bombs miss by a mile.
