Il tenente colonnello Frank &quot;Pete&quot; Everest lo spinse fino a Mach 2,87, sfiorando l&#039;obiettivo. Haggerty Jr.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Apt esegu\u00ec un profilo di volo quasi perfetto al primo tentativo, un&#039;impresa che persino Everest aveva faticato a compiere in otto voli. Il motore bruci\u00f2 un po&#039; pi\u00f9 a lungo del previsto e l&#039;X-2 acceler\u00f2 oltre Mach 3,19, pi\u00f9 di 2.000 miglia orarie. Ce l&#039;aveva fatta. Poi, ancora sopra Mach 3 e forse preoccupato di non avere abbastanza energia per planare fino a casa, vir\u00f2 bruscamente verso il letto del lago.<\/p><p>Fu l&#039;unica cosa a cui l&#039;aereo non pot\u00e9 sopravvivere. L&#039;X-2 entr\u00f2 in una violenta serie di rollii divergenti: l&#039;accoppiamento inerziale, per cui il movimento su un asse si propaga in modo incontrollato agli altri, lo stesso demone che aveva quasi ucciso Chuck Yeager sull&#039;X-1A tre anni prima. Ma l&#039;X-2 aveva dimostrato che il volo prolungato oltre Mach 3 era possibile e aveva mostrato, a un costo terribile, quanto potesse essere pericoloso il regime di Mach elevato e alta quota.
