Come il Bell X-1, era a propulsione a razzo e veniva lanciato dall&#039;aria: un B-29 modificato della Marina, designato P2B, lo trasportava in quota e lo sganciava, dopodich\u00e9 il pilota accendeva il motore e planava fino a un atterraggio di emergenza sul letto asciutto del lago di Edwards. Ne furono costruiti tre esemplari, che insieme effettuarono 313 missioni di ricerca.<\/p><p>Nel 1953 lo Skyrocket aveva gi\u00e0 raggiunto livelli di volo supersonico elevati. Il team di Crossfield ha cerato e sigillato la fusoliera per ridurre la resistenza aerodinamica, ha allungato gli ugelli di scarico per migliorare la risposta del timone e ha sovralimentato l&#039;aereo con il carburante. Hanno persino aspettato una giornata fredda e ventosa, perch\u00e9 le basse temperature aiutavano a contrastare il forte riscaldamento aerodinamico che una corsa ad alta velocit\u00e0 avrebbe generato.<\/p><p>Dopo che il P2B lo ebbe sganciato a 32.000 piedi, Crossfield accese il motore e sal\u00ec a 72.000 piedi, per poi virare bruscamente in picchiata. Man mano che lo Skyrocket consumava carburante, diventava pi\u00f9 leggero e veloce, e poco prima che i serbatoi si svuotassero, super\u00f2 Mach 2,005, circa 1.291 miglia orarie. Tre settimane dopo, il 12 dicembre, port\u00f2 il Bell X-1A a Mach 2,44 e rischi\u00f2 di morire quando perse il controllo a causa dell&#039;accoppiamento inerziale. Ma Crossfield era arrivato prima.
