Da qualche parte sopra il Grand Canyon, in un cielo cos\u00ec vasto da poterli contenere entrambi mille volte, si scontrarono. Una volta che gli aerei di linea si allontanavano dalle immediate vicinanze dei principali aeroporti, spesso volavano attraverso vaste aree di spazio aereo non controllato secondo il principio &quot;vedi ed evita&quot;: il semplice, terrificante principio che i piloti erano responsabili dell&#039;individuazione degli altri velivoli a occhio nudo. Non esisteva un radar che li tracciasse in quota e i controllori di volo avevano spesso solo un&#039;idea approssimativa della posizione di un determinato aereo.<\/p><p>Quella mattina, il volo TWA 2, un Lockheed Super Constellation con 70 passeggeri a bordo diretto a Kansas City, decoll\u00f2 da Los Angeles tre minuti prima del volo United Air Lines 718, un Douglas DC-7 con 58 passeggeri a bordo diretto a Chicago. Nessuno dei due equipaggi vide l&#039;altro in tempo. Le proteste portarono a audizioni al Congresso, a un&#039;ondata di finanziamenti e a una completa riorganizzazione del controllo del traffico aereo americano: controllo radar attivo dello spazio aereo ad alta quota e un&#039;unica potente agenzia incaricata di gestirlo. Nel 1958 venne creata la Federal Aviation Agency, antesignana dell&#039;odierna FAA.<\/p><p>Ogni volta che oggi un aereo di linea passa da un controllore all&#039;altro, viene tracciato dal radar e mantenuto nella propria area di volo protetta, vola all&#039;interno di un sistema che il disastro del Grand Canyon ha imposto. Le 128 persone che persero la vita sopra il canyon non lo sapevano, ma cambiarono il modo in cui il mondo intero vola.
