It was cancelled in 1969, its existence kept classified until 2015. Officially, it existed to prove &ldquo;the military usefulness of man in space.&rdquo; That was the cover.<\/p>\r\n<p>The real payload was a reconnaissance telescope codenamed Dorian, carrying the designation KH-10, built around a 72-inch primary mirror &mdash; optics powerful enough to resolve targets of military interest on the ground far below. Two-man crews would live aboard 60-foot-long stations for 30 days at a time, launched into polar orbit from a new pad at Vandenberg in California.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SZVyHL6_gxQ\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;font-style:italic;text-align:center\">The National Reconnaissance Office tells the story of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory, declassified in 2015.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The astronauts who couldn&rsquo;t tell anyone<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Air Force selected 17 pilots in three groups between 1965 and 1967 to fly the MOL. They trained for a mission most of the world did not know existed. Among them was Robert H. Lawrence, the first African American ever selected as an astronaut by any national space programme &mdash; a milestone the public would not fully appreciate for decades, because it was secret. Lawrence died in the crash of an F-104 in December 1967. Another MOL pilot, Michael Adams, left to fly the X-15 and was killed on a flight in 1967.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We were doing something that was exciting and important. Its most ingenious feature was also its most alarming-sounding: a hatch cut directly through the capsule&rsquo;s heat shield, so the astronauts could crawl from the capsule into the laboratory behind it without a spacewalk. Photo: National Reconnaissance Office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p>On 3 November 1966, a Titan IIIC lifted off from Cape Canaveral carrying a MOL mockup and a refurbished Gemini capsule &mdash; the same one that had flown NASA&rsquo;s uncrewed Gemini 2 mission. The suborbital test worked: the hatch-in-the-heat-shield design survived reentry. It was the only launch the MOL programme would ever make.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ffYSfkP3d8\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Cancelled before it flew<\/h2>\r\n<p>By 1969 the programme was years behind schedule and far over budget, and it had a fatal problem: unmanned reconnaissance satellites had become good enough to do the same job without risking a crew. On 10 June 1969, the Nixon administration cancelled the Manned Orbiting Laboratory. No astronaut had flown it, and none ever would.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;It got canceled on June 10, 1969, a date that will live in my memory for a long time, which was one of the low points in my life.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Robert Crippen<\/strong> &mdash; MOL astronaut; later pilot of the first Space Shuttle mission<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The men who flew anyway<\/h2>\r\n<p>Here the story turns. NASA invited the younger MOL pilots to join its astronaut corps, and on 14 August 1969, seven of them &mdash; Karol Bobko, Robert Crippen, Gordon Fullerton, Henry Hartsfield, Robert Overmyer, Donald Peterson and Richard Truly &mdash; transferred across. Every one of them would go on to fly the Space Shuttle in the 1980s, six as mission commanders.<\/p>\r\n<p>Crippen flew as pilot on the very first Shuttle flight in 1981. Truly later became the Administrator of NASA. The spy station they had trained for in secret never carried a soul &mdash; but the men it produced ended up shaping American spaceflight for a generation.
