It lifted off and climbed north along the Potomac, passing above and to the west of the presidential helicopter. A second regional flight inbound to DCA, Republic Airways Flight 4700, was sent around roughly three miles out while the airspace sorted itself out.<\/p>\r\n<p>Federal rules require aircraft in that controlled airspace to stay at least 1.5 miles apart horizontally or 500 feet apart vertically. The usual practice of pausing departures at DCA while the helicopter transits did not happen.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why this one stings<\/h2>\r\n<p>Washington is jumpy about exactly this scenario. In January 2025, an Army Black Hawk and an American Eagle regional jet collided over the Potomac just short of Reagan National, killing 67 people &mdash; the deadliest U.S. air disaster in a generation. In the aftermath, the FAA tightened the rules on mixing helicopters and airliners in that congested corridor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2085089967676559552&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:520px;border:none;border-radius:12px;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>That history is why a &ldquo;momentary&rdquo; loss of separation with the President aboard became national news within hours. Both aircraft landed safely, nobody was ever in real danger, and the numbers involved were small.
