On 18 November 1952, Lieutenant Royce Williams found himself alone against a swarm of Soviet MiG-15s over the Sea of Japan. In a running half-hour battle he shot down four, nursed his shattered jet back to the carrier riddled with 263 hits, and was ordered never to speak of it to avoid igniting open war with Moscow.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;In the moment I was a fighter pilot doing my job. I was only shooting what I had.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Royce Williams<\/strong> &mdash; US Navy F9F-5 Panther pilot, on his secret 1952 dogfight<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>The Panther also became the first jet of the Navy's Blue Angels, thrilling airshow crowds from 1949.
