Within hours they were diving on armour in the Sinai. The <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/fouga-magister\/\">Fouga Magister<\/a>, a jet designed to teach teenagers to fly, had gone to war.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The glider that grew an engine<\/h2><p>The Magister began in 1948 as Fouga's answer to a French Air Force call for a jet primary trainer. The first design was judged underpowered, so the team enlarged it and hung a pair of small Turbomeca Marbor\u00e9 turbojets on it. From the Fouga CM.8 research glider it inherited the feature everyone remembers: the distinctive butterfly, or V, tail. The Patrouille de France flew it from 1964 to 1980, trailing smoke across European skies and making the butterfly tail an icon.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The Magister saw action as a close air support platform in the Six-Day War, the Salvadoran Civil War, the Western Sahara War and the Congo Crisis.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Encyclopedic record<\/strong> &mdash; Fouga CM.170 Magister (via Wikipedia)<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>But it also fought. Israel operated it as the Tzukit, and when frontline fighters were committed elsewhere in 1967, flight-school Magisters flew ground-attack missions against tanks. Slow and lightly built, they were terribly exposed to ground fire and losses were heavy. Yet the butterfly-tailed Fouga refused to retire quietly.
