On 2 March, two Iranian Su-24 Fencer bombers launched from Bushehr and ran across the Persian Gulf at around 80 feet above the water, aiming for Al Udeid Air Base and the Ras Laffan gas complex. Qatari F-15QA Ababil fighters caught them roughly two minutes from their release points and shot both down &mdash; the first air-to-air victories for Qatar&rsquo;s air force and for this advanced Eagle variant.<\/p>\n<p>A Su-24 carries a crew of two, so four men were aboard the two jets. Between those two positions sits a quiet diplomatic channel &mdash; reports say Qatar and Pakistan have exchanged messages, though nothing that amounts to negotiation. For a captured pilot&rsquo;s family, the difference between &ldquo;held&rdquo; and &ldquo;not held&rdquo; is everything.<\/p>\n<p>None of it can be independently verified from the outside, and readers should treat both governments&rsquo; statements as exactly that: claims, made for an audience.
