Within three years the same graceful airframe was ranging far out over the Atlantic with bombs under its wings, shadowing convoys and radioing their positions to the U-boats waiting below.

Winston Churchill is said to have called it the “scourge of the Atlantic.” The phrase stuck, and it flatters the aircraft. The Condor was never built as a warplane. It was an adaptation — improvised, overloaded and structurally marginal — that happened to arrive at the one moment when Germany had nothing better with the range to do the job.

This is the story of how a record-setting Lufthansa airliner became, for one dangerous winter, the most feared aeroplane over the North Atlantic, and how quickly the Allies took its measure.

Quick Facts

Type

Long-range airliner, militarised as a maritime patrol bomber

Designer / first flight

Kurt Tank / 27 July 1937

Engines

Four radials; C-series: 4 × Bramo 323 Fafnir, ~809 kW (1,085 hp) each

Performance

Max ~380 km/h (240 mph); range ~3,560 km (2,210 miles); ~14 h endurance

Crew / load

5 crew; up to ~1,000 kg (2,200 lb) of bombs, plus defensive guns

Built / main unit

~276 aircraft; combat operator Kampfgeschwader 40 (KG 40)

From boardroom to Floyd Bennett Field

The Condor began as a commercial proposition. Kurt Tank, Focke-Wulf’s chief designer, put the concept to Deutsche Luft Hansa in 1936: a land-based, four-engined airliner able to carry more than twenty passengers over intercontinental distances. The first prototype flew on 27 July 1937 with Tank himself at the controls.

The type’s reputation was made by a single demonstration. On 10–11 August 1938 a long-range example flew non-stop from Berlin to Floyd Bennett Field, New York — roughly 6,400 km (4,000 miles) — in 24 hours and 56 minutes; the return took under twenty hours. It was the first heavier-than-air aircraft to fly non-stop between the two cities.

That civil pedigree matters, because it explains everything that followed. The airframe was engineered for the gentle, predictable loads of scheduled passenger service — not for the pounding of low-level attacks in a North Atlantic gale.

A Fw 200 Condor. A reconnaissance variant, first ordered by the Japanese Navy, provided the basis for the armed Fw 200 C: a strengthened, lengthened fuselage, wing bomb racks, defensive gun positions, and a ventral gondola. From 1940, flying with Kampfgeschwader 40 out of Bordeaux-Mérignac and later Norway, the Condors ranged deep into the Atlantic, finding convoys, reporting them to the U-boats, and bombing ships directly in low passes.

For a short period the effect was real. One widely repeated figure holds that between June 1940 and February 1941 the Condors sank some 365,000 tons of shipping. That number should be treated with caution: wartime aircrew claims were routinely optimistic, and the figure is contested. It was in this window that Churchill is said to have named the aircraft.

“the scourge of the Atlantic”
Winston Churchill — on the Fw 200 Condor

The weakness beneath the reputation was structural. The added military weight, imposed on an airframe never designed for it, caused several early Condors to break their backs on landing, typically through failure of the rear spar. Later production was reinforced, but the Condor remained a converted airliner asked to do a bomber’s work.

The counter, and the reckoning

The Allied answer came quickly and from several directions. By mid-1941 the Condors were being harried by RAF Coastal Command and, more pointedly, by Hurricane fighters catapulted from CAM ships — expendable merchantmen carrying a single, expendable fighter. Then came the escort carriers. HMS Audacity, the first of them, saw her handful of Grumman Martlets destroy seven Condors while escorting convoys in the final months of 1941.

A Fw 200 C Condor. Never numerous — only about 276 were built — the Condor was increasingly withdrawn from anti-shipping work and used as a transport, notably flying supplies toward Stalingrad. Hitler’s personal, unarmed Condor was destroyed in an Allied raid on Berlin-Tempelhof in July 1944.

Only one complete Condor survives. Ditched in 1942 and lying at some 60 m in Norway’s Trondheim Fjord, it was raised in 1999 for the Deutsches Technikmuseum, broke apart on recovery, and was rebuilt over two decades by former Airbus engineers. Finished in 2021, it now stands at Tempelhof — the airliner that Germany turned into a weapon, and could never quite make into a good one.

<div
