Vought took its supersonic F-8 Crusader, shortened it, thickened it, threw away the afterburner and won the contract in March 1964.<\/p>\n\n<p>Throwing away the afterburner was the whole idea. An attack aircraft does not need to go supersonic; it needs to loiter, carry weight, and come home. A non-afterburning turbofan gave the A-7 range and endurance that a fighter engine never would.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TG-cpnI05RQ\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>It reached combat almost indecently fast. First flight September 1965, operational February 1967, and VA-147 flying missions over North Vietnam from <em>Ranger<\/em> that December. Barely two years from maiden flight to war.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Computer Was the Weapon<\/h2><p>What made the A-7E extraordinary was not the airframe. It was the AN\/ASN-91 weapons-delivery computer wired to an inertial navigation system and an air-data computer, feeding what was among the first genuinely modern head-up displays in American service.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Computer controlled weapons delivery: This was probably the biggest impact, the ability to have weapons delivery controlled by a computer connected to the air data computer and inertial system &mdash; this was a true game changer and improved bomb delivery by a factor of 2X-3X in accuracy.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>David Tussey<\/strong> &mdash; former U.S. Navy A-7E pilot<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Two to three times. Not a marginal gain. The lowest loss rate of any American fighter in the theatre.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">It Also Had a Gun, and Pilots Enjoyed It<\/h2><p>The A-7D and A-7E carried the M61A1 Vulcan with a thousand rounds. Not everyone used it strictly as doctrine intended.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;I had figured out a way to drop bombs, then open up with the Gatling gun during pullout &ndash; a tactic designed to keep AAA heads low while I cleared the area. Truth be known, I just loved to shoot the gun.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Ralph Wetterhahn<\/strong> &mdash; then USAF Captain flying A-7Es on exchange with U.S. Navy squadron VA-146, 1970<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Wetterhahn had already shot down a MiG-21 during Operation Bolo before he ever strapped into a Corsair II. When a man like that says he enjoyed the gun, it is worth noting.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/aviation\/comments\/1hpxvda\/my_girlfriends_aviation_hot_take_the_a7_corsair\/\">My girlfriend&rsquo;s aviation hot take: \"The A-7 Corsair II is significantly uglier than the A-10 Warthog\"<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The looks question has never gone away. It is, in fairness, a short little ugly fellow.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Long Afterlife<\/h2><p>By Desert Storm only two A-7E squadrons were left, VA-46 and VA-72, aboard USS <em>John F. Kennedy<\/em> &mdash; one carrier out of six still flying the type. The Navy retired them in May 1991; the Air National Guard followed in 1993.<\/p>\n\n<p>There was one stranger chapter.
