It was a 1953 Cessna 180 — a single-engine, tailwheel, four-seat lightplane of the sort that fills small-town airfields. Two of its seats had been pulled out and replaced with fuel tanks.

On 19 March 1964 a 38-year-old Ohio housewife named Geraldine Mock took off from Port Columbus in it, alone, and pointed east. Twenty-nine days later she came back the other way, and no woman had ever done that before.

Quick Facts

Pilot: Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock (1925–2014), Columbus, Ohio

Aircraft: 1953 Cessna 180, N1538C, named Spirit of Columbus — “Three-Eight Charlie”

Departed: Port Columbus Airport, 09:31 local, 19 March 1964

Returned: Port Columbus, 21:36 local, 17 April 1964

Elapsed: 29 days, 11 hours, 59 minutes — 21 stopovers

Distance: 23,103 statute miles (37,180 km), per the Smithsonian and the FAA

Records: Certified by the NAA/FAI as a round-the-world speed record for aircraft under 3,585 lb; the Smithsonian counts seven records in total

The aircraft today: National Air and Space Museum, Washington DC — the Thomas W. Mock had been flying for eight years. She had a licence, an instrument rating, and a husband, Russell, who ran the preparation of the aeroplane with Al Baumeister.

What went into Three-Eight Charlie was not amateur work: a new 225 hp Continental O-470-A, two automatic direction finders, dual VHF navigation and communication radios, a long-range HF set with a trailing wire antenna, an autopilot and a new compass. Javelin Aircraft engineered the cabin ferry tanks that took the place of the passenger seats.

Fully fuelled she was roughly 900 lb over normal gross weight and flew on an FAA ferry permit. Sources disagree on the tankage — the Smithsonian says the extra tanks added 183 gallons for a 3,500-mile range, the FAA's own history sheet says 178 gallons total and about 25 hours' endurance — so take either with attribution rather than splitting the difference.

Three-Eight Charlie itself: Cessna 180 N1538C, Spirit of Columbus, preserved by the Smithsonian. The press had its duel.

It was never a clean comparison. The National Aeronautic Association had given Mock the official women's round-the-world speed sanction because her paperwork was filed first, which prompted Mock to move her departure forward from 1 April to 19 March. The two women were flying different routes under different rules.

Mock landed back in Columbus on 17 April. Smith completed her own flight on 12 May — 55 days, and about 27,750 miles, some 4,600 miles further than Mock's route. She finished second in the headlines and won the Harmon Trophy as the outstanding aviatrix of 1964, awarded after she died in an unrelated crash the following February. Smith did not fail. She simply flew a longer way round.

The Columbus Foundation's short film on the Spirit of Columbus and the flight that made it famous.

Twenty-one stops and a lot of ocean

The route ran east: Bermuda, the Azores, Casablanca, across North Africa and the Middle East, on through Karachi, Calcutta, Bangkok, Manila, Guam, Wake Island, Honolulu, and finally the American mainland. Twenty-one stopovers, mostly alone, mostly on radios and dead reckoning, in an aeroplane with one engine and no radar.

There was brake failure at Bermuda, a wrong-airport arrival in Egypt, and long overwater legs where the trailing antenna and the HF set were the only link to anyone. There was also, near the end, arithmetic: the FAI's qualifying distance for a round-the-world flight was the length of the Tropic of Cancer, 22,858.8 miles. Mock added legs through Tucson, Texas and Bowling Green to be certain she cleared it.

“Somewhere not far away a war was being fought, but from the sky above, all looked peaceful.”
Jerrie Mock — on overflying Vietnam, Three-Eight Charlie (1970), quoted by the Smithsonian

Home: Mock in Columbus days after landing, 20 April 1964.
