From 2027, the Swedish Armed Forces will begin retiring nine NH90 battlefield transports — barely a decade after the last of them was delivered — and lean instead on a growing fleet of American Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawks.

Reports emerging on 27 August 2026 confirm what many inside the Försvarsmakten had long suspected: the NH90, a European flagship built to symbolise continental unity, has proved too expensive and too unreliable to soldier on. Sweden now joins Australia, Norway and Belgium in walking away from all or part of its NH90 fleet.

It is a quietly damning verdict on one of Europe’s most ambitious defence-industrial projects — and another win for a 50-year-old American design that simply refuses to be beaten.

Quick Facts

Fleet: Sweden ordered 18 NH90s in 2001 — nine Hkp 14E transports and nine Hkp 14F NATO Frigate Helicopters

Retiring: the nine Hkp 14E transports, starting 2027; the ASW-roled Hkp 14F soldier on into the next decade

Replacement: Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk (Hkp 16)

Black Hawk buy: 12 more UH-60Ms ordered in 2024, on top of the original 15

Also exited NH90: Australia, Norway, Belgium

A European dream that never flew right

The NH90 was conceived as the future of NATO rotary aviation: a single, fly-by-wire platform that could haul troops one day and hunt submarines the next, built by a French-German-Italian-Dutch consortium under the NHIndustries banner. Sweden bought 18 of them in 2001, splitting the order between the Hkp 14E transport and the Hkp 14F frigate helicopter.

The reality was chronic. Low availability, punishing maintenance hours per flight hour, and eye-watering spare-parts costs dogged operators across the continent. Sweden’s aircraft were delivered years late and never delivered the readiness the air wing needed.

An NH90 in transport configuration — the type Sweden will begin retiring from 2027. (French Army example shown; Swedish Hkp 14E wears different markings.)

Sweden is not the first to bail

The Nordic exit has a template. Norway declared in 2022 that it was scrapping its NH90 programme outright and demanding its money back; the dispute ended in a settlement under which NHIndustries reportedly paid Norway around €375 million. Australia grounded and then dumped its MRH-90 Taipan variant after a fatal crash during Exercise Talisman Sabre in 2023, ordering UH-60M Black Hawks in its place. Belgium has been shedding its transport NH90s too.

“The conclusion is that the NH90 will never be able to meet the requirements of the Norwegian Armed Forces.”
Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency — statement on cancelling Norway’s NH90 programme, June 2022

Stockholm’s answer is the same as Oslo’s and Canberra’s: the Black Hawk. Sweden already flies 15 UH-60Ms as the Hkp 16, rushed into service in 2011 to cover an earlier helicopter gap, and in 2024 committed to 12 more. Simple, rugged and supported by an enormous global supply chain, the Sikorsky is everything the NH90 was supposed to be and never quite became.

What it means

For Sweden — a NATO member since 2024, guarding the strategically vital Baltic — helicopter readiness is not academic. Trading a troubled European type for a proven American one buys availability now, at the cost of a little European industrial pride. The Hkp 14F submarine hunters will stay on for years yet, so the NH90 will not vanish from Swedish skies overnight. But the direction is unmistakable.

Sources: FlightGlobal; The Aviationist; Scramble; Aviation Week; The War Zone.

Norway Clears 21 More UH-60M Black Hawks

France Fields Its First NH90 Caiman Standard 2

Sweden has decided that its most modern transport helicopter is not worth keeping.
