Wsiewo\u0142od Jakimiuk, who led PZL&rsquo;s fighter team, drew up a sturdy low-wing monoplane, all metal, deliberately roomy enough to accept far more powerful engines as they became available. It was named Jastrz\u0105b, the Hawk.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan was sound. The execution was cursed. A British-supplied undercarriage arrived four months late, pushing the maiden flight back to February 1939 &mdash; and when the Hawk finally flew, it disappointed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vy7pXtb-QBE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The little Mercury could push the big fighter to only 274 mph, a full 35 mph below expectations, and the aircraft was twitchy in slow turns and suffered tail flutter at speed. Some of that was fixable &mdash; a redesigned carburettor intake, built for the wrong engine, was throttling the Mercury; enlarge it and the modified prototype hit its promised 310 mph by August 1939. Then the Germans invaded. PZL&rsquo;s test pilot, Jerzy Widawski, tried to fly the one airworthy prototype east to Lw\u00f3w to save it &mdash; and was shot down by a Polish anti-aircraft gun whose crew took the unfamiliar shape for a German aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px;width:100%\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/08\/pzl-p11c-gull-wing.jpg\" alt=\"PZL P.11c gull-wing fighter\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block;border-radius:6px\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">Poland&rsquo;s pilots fought the 1939 campaign in aircraft like this P.11c &mdash; brave crews in obsolete machines, while their modern replacement never reached them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland&rsquo;s airmen went to war outnumbered and outdated, and yet fought with a ferocity that stunned the Luftwaffe.
