Near the village of Gerjen, a short distance from the plant, the Cessna came down in a forced landing. Its landing gear collapsed and the aircraft ended up tilted on one wing in a field &mdash; early Hungarian reports differed over whether it was sunflowers or corn. Nobody was hurt, and the plant reported no damage.<\/p><p>The Gripens reached the scene after the aircraft was already down, circled overhead, and stayed on station until a rescue helicopter and ground units arrived. Notably, neither the ministry nor the police statement said the Cessna actually entered the prohibited airspace directly over the reactors &mdash; only that it was heading that way.<\/p><p>The human side was stranger still. According to the National Police, the pilot climbed out and was found walking along Route 512 in a confused state. When a passing motorist stopped to help, the man got into the car and tried to drive off before being stopped. Officers detained a 24-year-old from Szomor nearby within minutes. The ministry said Gripens had already been launched the previous afternoon, on 28 August, after a French-registered Piper PA-28 entered Hungarian airspace near Fert&#337;szentmikl&oacute;s without clearance &mdash; an airspace violation Budapest reported to the relevant authorities.<\/p><p>Both launches came in a difficult fortnight for Hungary&rsquo;s small fighter arm, which lost a Gripen in a crash at Szolnok on 24 August. Hungary flies a modest fleet of the Swedish jets and agreed in early 2024 to expand it to 18 Gripen C\/D aircraft, the backbone of its air-policing and quick-reaction duties.<\/p><p>For all the alarm a nuclear plant and a scrambled fighter pair can generate, the outcome here was almost anticlimactic: a broken light aircraft in a field, a confused young man in custody, and two Gripens back on the ground by lunchtime.
