Algeria operates one of Africa&rsquo;s largest and most capable fast-jet fleets, with more than 60 of the type in service.<\/p><p>The tanker matters as much as the fighters. Niamey sits roughly 2,600 kilometres south of Algiers, and Algeria&rsquo;s Flanker fleet is based in the north of the country. The Il-78 &mdash; the only aerial refuelling type the Algerian Air Force operates &mdash; is what turns a fighter deployment across the Sahara into a same-morning proposition. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The mutiny that triggered it<\/h2>\r\n<p>The trouble began in the early hours of 29 August, when soldiers opened fire on sensitive sites in Niamey, including the presidency and Air Base 101 &mdash; the Nigerien Air Force facility co-located with Diori Hamani International Airport. Nigerien state television said security forces had contained the disturbance, and the country&rsquo;s defence minister said military activity in the capital had been brought under control and critical sites retaken.<\/p><p>Air Base 101 has become one of the most symbolically loaded pieces of real estate in the Sahel. French forces completed their withdrawal from it in December 2023 after Niger&rsquo;s junta ended Western cooperation agreements, and the US military left in July 2024. It has been attacked twice already in 2026. Its 2020 constitution allows participation in peacekeeping operations under United Nations, African Union or Arab League frameworks, and requires a two-thirds parliamentary vote before army units are sent outside national territory.<\/p><p>The defence ministry&rsquo;s statement mentioned neither a parliamentary vote nor a multilateral mandate. It framed the deployment purely as bilateral military cooperation with a neighbour that asked for help. Whether that framing is a legal nuance or a genuine shift in doctrine is the question analysts will be chewing on. It did not come out of nowhere: Algeria flew four helicopters to Niamey on 9 August as a donation to the Nigerien army.<\/p><p>As of the ministry&rsquo;s release, no duration, basing arrangement or operational task had been disclosed, and Algiers did not say whether the fighters would actually fly sorties over Niger. That silence is doing a lot of work.
