Introduced in the late 1960s, it is festooned with the tools of electronic espionage: a large side-looking radar canoe under the fuselage, optical and infrared sensors, and an array of antennas for collecting signals.<\/p><p>Its job is to fly along a border in international airspace and listen. It maps radar emissions, records communications, and builds a picture of how an opponent&rsquo;s air defences are arranged and how quickly they react. Il-20 flights near NATO territory are routinely tracked and escorted by allied fighters, and the type has been picked up over the Baltic repeatedly this year. The wider pattern is harder to shrug off: drones have crossed into Romanian airspace, prompting scrambles and, in one case, a shoot-down by Spanish F-18s operating there.<\/p><p>None of that happened here. A Russian intelligence aircraft flew where it is legally allowed to fly, Polish fighters met it, nobody crossed a line, and everyone went home.
