The EPA classifies them as a probable human carcinogen, with additional effects on the immune, reproductive, developmental and neurological systems.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;As our Airmen are our greatest asset, their safety and health are my top priority.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Maj. Colin Connor<\/strong> &mdash; Commander, 20th Air Force<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The problem is that the Minuteman III entered service in the 1970s and still leans on components from that era. Where the missiles go, decades-old support equipment often goes too.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A bigger picture<\/h2>\r\n<p>Concern about cancer in the missile community has been building for years. In 2023 the Air Force launched the Missile Community Cancer Study after reports of non-Hodgkin&rsquo;s lymphoma clusters at ICBM bases; sampling later found elevated PCB levels at Minot and Malmstrom and trace amounts at F.E. Warren. Advocacy group the Torchlight Initiative called the swift removal of the testers &ldquo;a great start&rdquo; while pressing for far more.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;This may be building a bigger picture that we may not yet be fully witting of.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Col. Jennifer Reeves (ret.)<\/strong> &mdash; former commander, 341st Missile Wing<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The reassuring version of this story is that the system worked: an Airman knew the hazard, spoke up, and the command reacted in days. The uncomfortable version is the one Reeves points to &mdash; that a single contaminated tester may be one visible edge of a much larger legacy problem the force is only starting to map.
