He reportedly never lost. But Boyd was not content to simply be good; he wanted to know exactly why one aircraft beat another. It expressed a fighter&rsquo;s performance as its ability to gain, keep, and spend energy through every point in a maneuver &mdash; and it let designers compare aircraft objectively for the first time.
