War-risk cover for overflight is priced on assessed threat, and it can be withdrawn at short notice. When underwriters decide a region has become unacceptable, airlines stop flying there long before any regulator issues a formal notice, because an uninsured widebody is not an aircraft any airline will dispatch.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ukraine has been escalating deep strikes for months. Russian airspace has been closed to EU, UK and US carriers since the tit-for-tat bans of 2022, which is why flights from Europe to Northeast Asia now take long southern detours and burn extra hours of fuel.<\/p>\r\n<p>What remains overhead is a narrower mix: Russian domestic and international operations, Chinese carriers using the polar and Siberian routes that give them a real advantage over European rivals, and a scattering of Gulf, Central Asian and other non-aligned airlines. Each closure is a small, self-inflicted preview of the scenario Zelensky described.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why the warning carries weight<\/h2>\r\n<p>The reason a statement like this lands rather than being dismissed is that the aviation industry has a painful record with contested airspace. Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in July 2014 with 298 people aboard, on a route many airlines were still using. Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down by Iranian air defences shortly after take-off from Tehran in January 2020, killing all 176 on board.<\/p>\r\n<p>More recently, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 crashed near Aktau in December 2024 after what investigators and Baku attributed to Russian air defence fire during a drone alert, killing 38 of the 67 people aboard. In every case the aircraft was a bystander in someone else's air battle.
