On Friday, the strangest aviation story of the summer becomes a Netflix documentary.<\/p>\r\n<p>The streamer has fast-tracked a film about the afternoon in July when the President of the United States boarded Air Force One in front of the world's cameras in Ankara, walked back off it into an airport catering container, and flew home on a different aeroplane while the famous blue-and-white 747 departed as a decoy. It arrives under Netflix's Instadocs banner as The Decoy Plane, and the platform has already put a sneak peek online.<\/p>\r\n<p>We covered the operation when the Washington Post broke it in August, and the argument about whether it was tradecraft or humiliation. Trump boarded the VC-25A in full view of the travelling press. He then left the aircraft into a catering container positioned alongside it, was driven away in the catering truck, and joined a US Air Force C-32A for the flight onward. The 747 took off on schedule carrying staff and the press corps, who filed from an aircraft the president was not on. CBS News reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were aboard the decoy, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth flew with Trump.<\/p>\r\n<p>According to a senior administration official quoted by ABC News, the decision was made very late.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The decision was made about four or five hours before his scheduled departure and was driven by intelligence that an Iranian terror cell had snuck into Turkey with a shoulder-fired missile&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Senior administration official<\/strong> &mdash; Quoted by ABC News on the Ankara decoy operation<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The same official said it was believed the Iranians had information about Trump's movements in Ankara, and, on the president's reaction to the plan, offered a three-word verdict: he loved it.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why a shoulder-fired missile changes the maths<\/h2>\r\n<p>A man-portable air-defence missile is not a threat to an airliner at cruise. It is a threat for the few minutes an aircraft spends low and slow, climbing out or coming in, within a few kilometres of the ground and inside a footprint an operator can reach on foot. That is why the departure end of a runway is the classic ambush point, and why a credible MANPADS report near an airport is treated as an emergency rather than a nuisance.<\/p>\r\n<p>Against that specific threat, the value of a decoy is obvious. A VC-25A is the most recognisable aircraft on earth. Nothing about it is subtle, and an operator waiting under the departure path does not need inside information to know which aeroplane matters. Air Force One is not an aircraft, it is a callsign: any US Air Force aircraft with the president aboard carries it. So the 747 that flew out of Ankara without him was, at that moment, not Air Force One. The C-32A was.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The part that is really being argued about<\/h2>\r\n<p>The White House has consistently framed the operation as routine protection.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>White House statement<\/strong> &mdash; Responding to reporting on the Ankara flight<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Decoy movements are not new, and no protective service anywhere would apologise for using one. The friction has never really been about the tactic. It has been about the press corps flying home on an aircraft they had been allowed to believe carried the president, which is a question about transparency rather than about aviation security.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NKmm-eI3MIw\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Netflix, for its part, has moved with unusual speed: the story broke on 10 August and the film lands on 4 September, twenty-five days later. Whether it is a serious look at protective aviation or a comedy about a president in a food lift will be clear on Friday.
