Everything about it promised Mach 2.

It never got past Mach 1.21, and it managed that only in a dive.

And yet the X-3 is one of the most consequential research aircraft America ever built — not because of what it achieved, but because of what nearly killed a test pilot one afternoon in October 1954.

Quick Facts

Built: one aircraft, serial 49-2892; a second was cancelled and cannibalised for spares

First flight: 20 October 1952, Douglas test pilot Bill Bridgeman

Design goal: sustained Mach 2

Fastest achieved: Mach 1.208, on 28 July 1953, in a 30-degree dive

Intended engines: two Westinghouse J46 afterburning turbojets

Engines actually fitted: two Westinghouse XJ34-WE-17, 4,900 lbf each with afterburner

Wingspan: 22 ft 8 in, with a wing just 4.5% thick

Flights: 51, by four pilots; last flight 23 May 1956

Survivor: National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio

The engines that never came

The X-3 was designed around a pair of Westinghouse J46 afterburning turbojets. The J46 did not arrive on schedule, and Douglas ended up bolting in the smaller XJ34 instead — an engine producing 4,900 lbf with the afterburner lit, against the roughly 7,000 lbf the design had assumed.

The result was an aircraft with the drag profile of a dart and the thrust of a trainer. Its take-off run across the Edwards lakebed became notorious; it had to be dragged into the air at around 260 mph, and it chewed through tyres so consistently that it forced a revision of high-speed tyre design standards.

Bridgeman worked this out immediately. On the first flight, with Chuck Yeager flying chase in an F-86 alongside, he keyed the microphone.

“This thing doesn’t want to stay in the air.”
Bill Bridgeman — Douglas Aircraft test pilot, radioing from the X-3 on its first flight, 20 October 1952

The X-3 in flight. The proportions tell the story: an enormous fuselage carrying two undersized engines, and wings barely big enough to be seen. Photo: NASA

27 October 1954

By 1954 the X-3 had been handed to NACA, and its speed programme had quietly been abandoned. What it was good for now was stability testing — and it was good for that precisely because of the flaw that ruined it. All its mass sat strung out along a long thin fuselage, with almost nothing out on the wings. That is exactly how the new generation of fighters was being built.

On 27 October, NACA pilot Joseph Walker made an abrupt left roll at Mach 0.92 with the rudder held centred. The aircraft rolled as asked, then pitched up twenty degrees and yawed sixteen, thrashing for about five seconds before he caught it.

He did not land. He climbed, dived to Mach 1.154, and did it again.

This time the X-3 pitched down to minus 6.7 g, then up to plus 7 g, sideslipping twenty-one degrees and throwing a 2 g load sideways through the airframe. Walker damped it out and brought it home. Inspection found the fuselage had reached its maximum design limit load. A little more and it would have come apart in the air.

The X-3 on the Edwards lakebed. Its mass concentrated along the fuselage rather than the wings, the exact configuration that made inertia coupling dangerous. Photo: NACA/NASA

Why that flight mattered

What Walker had ridden through was inertia coupling — a manoeuvre commanded about one axis producing violent, uncommanded motion about the others. NACA’s William H. Phillips had predicted it on paper. Nobody had brought back hard instrumented data from inside it.

The timing could not have been sharper. North American F-100A Super Sabres were crashing for reasons nobody could pin down. The X-3 data and the F-100A data were published together in NACA research memorandum RM-H55A13 in February 1955, and the lesson was blunt: long fuselage, small wing, insufficient tail equals trouble. The fix — more wing, and much more vertical fin — turned the F-100 from a killer into a usable fighter, and the generous tail surfaces on fighters ever since trace back to it.

The X-3’s other legacy is visible in a silhouette. Its stubby, razor-thin, low-aspect-ratio wing went almost directly into the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. A 1964 RAND study concluded that Lockheed could very probably not have flown an F-104 prototype within a year of go-ahead without what the X-3 programme had already learned.

The historians have been less romantic about it.

“The Douglas X-3, NACA’s glamorous hangar queen.”
Dr. Richard P. It was a hangar queen, grounded for most of a year after Walker’s flight, flown just 51 times in four years, and retired in May 1956 having never come close to its design speed. It also generated the data that stopped a generation of fighters from killing their pilots.

NASA’s own footage of the X-3 shows the take-off run better than any description — watch how long it takes to unstick.

Restored and upscaled period footage of the aircraft in flight:

And a fuller account of the programme:

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What was the Douglas X-3 Stiletto?

An American research aircraft of the early 1950s, built to explore sustained flight at Mach 2.
