Paramount put Tom Cruise, then 23, in a leather jacket and in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat, and audiences walked out of theaters wanting to fly. Recruiters noticed. In Phoenix, a Navy spokeswoman told the Associated Press that summer, recruiters were taking twice as many calls as usual about the aviation programme, and about 90 percent of the applicants had seen the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy made the most of it. In some cities recruiters manned tables outside movie theaters during the premieres, catching moviegoers on the way out. The often-repeated claim that recruitment &ldquo;jumped 500 percent&rdquo; is another matter, as we explain below; the documented effect was real, but a good deal smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forty years later, the film's influence on military aviation culture is still measurable. Top Gun didn't just sell movie tickets. It rewrote how an entire generation imagined fighter pilots, military service, and the machines of aerial warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Pentagon's Perfect Partnership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top Gun's relationship with the US military was symbiotic from the start. The Navy gave Paramount access to real F-14 Tomcats, real aircraft carriers, and real TOPGUN instructors at NAS Miramar. In return, producers gave the Navy script approval. The result was a film that made naval aviation look like the most thrilling job on Earth \u2014 which, to be fair, it probably was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aerial sequences were shot using real aircraft performing real manoeuvres, filmed by cameras mounted on specially modified jets. There were no computer graphics. When Maverick rolls inverted over a MiG-28, that's an actual F-14 rolling inverted over an actual F-5E. When the afterburners light on the catapult launch, that heat shimmer is real. Audiences could feel the difference, even if they couldn't articulate why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film cost $15 million to make and grossed $356 million worldwide. Adjusting for inflation, it was one of the most profitable films of the decade. More importantly for the Navy, it made the words \"fighter pilot\" synonymous with elite cool in a way that no advertisement could have manufactured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">Callsigns, Aviators, and Volleyball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top Gun embedded fighter pilot culture into civilian consciousness. Callsigns, previously an insider tradition, became mainstream. Leather flight jackets and aviator sunglasses became fashion, and the claim that Ray-Ban&rsquo;s Aviator sales rose 40 percent after the film is repeated everywhere, although we could not trace it to a published figure from the company. Kenny Loggins&rsquo; &ldquo;Danger Zone&rdquo; became inescapable. For better or worse, the public image of a military pilot shifted permanently from stoic professional to adrenaline-fuelled maverick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real fighter pilots had a complicated relationship with the film. Many loved it \u2014 it made their job look exactly as exciting as it actually was. Others cringed at the Hollywood liberties: the dogfight tactics bore little resemblance to real beyond-visual-range combat, and the idea of a pilot disobeying direct orders and buzzing a control tower would end a real career before the wheels touched down. But even the sceptics admitted the film got one thing right: the feeling. The raw, physical, terrifying thrill of strapping into a machine that pulls 7 G and goes Mach 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">Maverick Returns \u2014 And So Does the Effect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Top Gun: Maverick was released in 2022, the US military was struggling to recruit, with service chiefs describing the toughest market in decades. The Navy tried the 1986 playbook again. &ldquo;We are working with local theaters to look for opportunities to have recruiters engage with people interested in learning more about Naval service,&rdquo; Navy Recruiting Command said, and in some areas recruiters were invited to set up tables. The sequel grossed about $1.5 billion worldwide, Tom Cruise&rsquo;s highest-grossing film, and it earned something the original never quite managed: genuine respect from fighter pilots for its flying. The Navy has published no figures showing a recruiting bump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aerial footage in Maverick was shot with actors in real <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/fa-18-hornet\">F\/A-18<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/fa-18-super-hornet\">Super Hornets<\/a> pulling real G forces \u2014 a Tom Cruise mandate that nearly broke the production schedule. The result was the most authentic air combat footage ever committed to film. For a new generation that had never seen an F-14 in the sky, the sequel did what the original had done 36 years earlier: it made someone walk out of a theatre and think, for the first time, \"I could do that.\"<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The 500 Percent Myth<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost every article about Top Gun repeats that Navy recruitment rose 500 percent after the film. The earliest printed version traced by fact-checkers is a single sentence in David Robb&rsquo;s 2004 book <em>Operation Hollywood<\/em>, attributed to &ldquo;the navy&rdquo; without a source, and it referred to young men wanting to become naval aviators, not recruitment overall. Navy Recruiting Command figures cited by Australia&rsquo;s AAP FactCheck tell a calmer story: 94,878 enlistments in fiscal year 1986 against 87,593 the year before, a rise of about 8 percent, followed by a small fall in 1987. Fiscal 1986 ended in September, only four months after the film opened, and the Navy&rsquo;s advertising budget was rising sharply at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy itself was careful at the time. In 1987 a spokesman said the film had been &ldquo;a plus for Navy interest&rdquo;. In 1989 another told reporters the service had not seen &ldquo;any specific event cause a change in the result of recruiting.&rdquo; Interest in naval aviation clearly rose. A fivefold surge is not in the record.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Navy Says Thank You<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever the exact numbers, the Navy is in no doubt about what the films did for it. On 17 December 2024, at Longcross Studios near London, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro presented Tom Cruise with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award. Established in 1951, it is the highest honour the Secretary of the Navy can give a civilian from outside the department. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg received it in 1999 for <em>Saving Private Ryan<\/em>.
