It has been there since 16 July 2025. It is painted for an airline that has flown four flights in its entire existence, holds no air operator\u2019s certificate, and is now defending itself against a petition to have it wound up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The aircraft is 9H-GLOBL. The airline is Global Airlines, the British start-up founded by Holiday Swap entrepreneur James Asquith, which promised a fleet of four superjumbos and a new kind of transatlantic travel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 4 September, aeroTELEGRAPH reported that a creditor has asked a UK court to liquidate the company. It is not the first such petition. On 15 May 2025 the A380 flew Glasgow to New York-JFK under a damp lease with Hi Fly Malta. It sat at JFK for four days, flew back to Glasgow on 19 May, then operated a one-off Manchester to New York service on 21 May and returned.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That was it. Four transatlantic sectors. The aircraft is due its 12-year heavy check. There are very few places on earth that can perform heavy maintenance on an A380, and the queue is long.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We\u2019re privy to huge backlogs in heavy maintenance slots for the aircraft.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>James Asquith<\/strong> &mdash; founder and CEO, Global Airlines, in an interview with Simple Flying<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The petition<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>According to the UK official journal The Gazette, a petition to wind up Global Airlines Ltd was filed on 29 May 2026 by Jessica Huffman Reese, a US-based claimant who asserts she is a creditor of the company. She is represented by a lawyer from Vedder Price, a firm whose specialisms include aviation finance. The story was first reported by the portal DJs Aviation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two hearings were listed, on 15 July and 2 September. Nothing has been published about what happened at either. There was reportedly a similar petition in 2025 that was withdrawn, and indications of another in March 2026 that was also withdrawn.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It is worth being precise about what this means. A winding-up petition sits inside insolvency law because that is the legal framework such applications are made under. It is not itself a declaration that a company is insolvent, and no insolvency filing for Global Airlines appears in the public record. The UK company register shows no new entries since a personnel change in May.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What it does mean is that somebody with a claim against the company has now twice, possibly three times, asked a court to shut it down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">People are leaving<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The other signal is personnel. Richard Stephenson, the former UK Civil Aviation Authority communications director who joined Global as a board director and chief commercial officer, has made clear he is no longer the airline\u2019s sales chief and is looking for new opportunities. He had already resigned as a company director in March 2025.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Meanwhile the promises keep coming. At the end of June 2026, Asquith laid out three objectives: get 9H-GLOBL flying again before the end of the year, add a second aircraft, and open a route between the UK and the Maldives. But the reason aviation enthusiasts keep following it is simple: somebody actually bought an A380 and actually flew paying passengers across the Atlantic in it, at a moment when every major operator was retiring the type.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The superjumbo is the last four-engined passenger aircraft that anyone gets excited about. A start-up staking everything on it was always going to be either brilliant or a disaster.
