They show a dark, wing-shaped vehicle called Hazel dropping away from twin balloons joined by a long truss, high above the Earth.

They are stills from an animation. There is no Hazel. There is no SuperTandem. There is no specification, no funding disclosure, no date, and no indication that anything will ever be built.

Which would make this a non-story, except that JP Aerospace is not a fraud, the idea is not stupid, and the real history of dropping things off other things at altitude is one of the more interesting corners of aviation.

Quick Facts — What was actually released

Who: JP Aerospace, an all-volunteer non-profit founded in the late 1970s by John Powell

What: Still images from an upcoming concept video

The vehicle: “Hazel” — a winged shape shown separating from a high-altitude airship

The carrier: “SuperTandem” — twin balloons joined by a truss

Hardware built: None

Specifications published: None

Funding disclosed: None

JP Aerospace’s verified best: An unmanned twin-balloon airship to 95,085 ft, 22 October 2011

Who JP Aerospace Actually Are

They describe themselves as “America’s OTHER Space Program” and as a volunteer-based DIY space programme. That is not marketing spin; it is accurate. The organisation runs on Patreon subscriptions, merchandise, crowdfunded flights and selling advertising space on photographs taken from balloons. One flight was funded by thirteen customer adverts.

Their genuinely impressive achievement is PongSat: student experiments flown inside ping-pong balls, carried to the edge of space free of charge. The first flew on 9 March 2002 with fourteen experiments from a Sacramento high-school maths class. JP Aerospace says it has since flown over 18,000 PongSats involving more than 80,000 students. That is a real contribution to aerospace education and it deserves more attention than the concept art does.

Their headline technical claim is the Tandem airship flight of 22 October 2011 over Nevada’s Black Rock Desert: two balloon envelopes separated by a thirty-foot carbon-fibre truss, two electric motors turning six-foot propellers, eighty pounds all-up including twenty pounds of balloon, recovered under five parachutes from 95,085 feet. It was the organisation’s 126th mission.

Two honest caveats. The altitude is a claim announced by press release, and contemporary aviation press covered it as such — Aero-News Network’s headline at the time began “If Confirmed”. And JP Aerospace has never conducted a crewed high-altitude flight of any kind.

“The higher you start from, the smaller your rocket needs to be. The first attempt failed in the Arctic in August 1952. The first success came a year later in the Atlantic. In September 1957 thirty-six rockoons were launched from the icebreaker USS Glacier for the International Geophysical Year, from 75 degrees north to 72 degrees south.

A rockoon: a sounding rocket hung under a balloon, fired once the balloon has done the hard work of getting through the thick air. Van Allen’s idea, 1949. Photo: Frederick W. Kent Collection, University of Iowa Archives

Van Allen could not fire his rockoons from Iowa for fear the spent rockets would land on an Iowan or his house. The problem with air launch has always been where the pieces come down.

Then it got serious. On 13 October 1959 a Bold Orion missile released from a B-47 at 35,000 feet passed within about four miles of the Explorer VI satellite — the first interception of a satellite in history. From 1959 the X-15 was dropped from a B-52 199 times, and on 3 October 1967 Pete Knight took the X-15A-2 to Mach 6.7, a crewed-aircraft record that still stands.

And on 5 April 1990, Pegasus flew from NASA’s NB-52B with no prior test flights and became the world’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. Its wings and fins were designed by Burt Rutan’s Scaled Composites. From 1994 it flew from an L-1011 called Stargazer, released at around 40,000 feet with five seconds of free fall before ignition. Forty-five missions between 1990 and 2021, three failures.

Stargazer with a Pegasus rocket slung underneath. Forty-five missions, an 89 per cent success rate, and the template every air-launch start-up has been chasing since. Photo: NASA / Lori Losey

And a Short History of Not Making It Work

The graveyard is bigger than the trophy cabinet.

Zero 2 Infinity flight-tested its balloon-launched Bloostar off Spain in March 2017 and has not reached orbit. Leo Aerospace, developing a reusable rockoon called Regulus, shut down in March 2020; its chief executive said plainly that funding was the major component.

Virgin Orbit is the cautionary tale. LauncherOne failed on its first attempt in May 2020, reached orbit in January 2021 with ten CubeSats released from the port wing of a 747 at 33,000 feet, then failed again in January 2023 and took nine satellites with it. The company filed for Chapter 11 in April 2023. Stratolaunch bought the 747 for $17 million.

Which brings us to the one outfit actually doing what Hazel depicts. Stratolaunch’s Roc — 385 feet of wingspan, the largest ever flown, beating the Spruce Goose — carries the Talon-A hypersonic vehicle. Talon-A went supersonic in March 2024, exceeded Mach 5 in December 2024, and in March 2025 flew hypersonically and landed on a runway. In July 2026 Stratolaunch announced more than ten successful hypersonic flights with a reusable, fully autonomous air-launched aircraft.

That is the first sustained reusable hypersonic flight test programme in the United States since the X-15 finished in 1968. It took a company, a budget and a 385-foot aeroplane.

JP Aerospace’s own footage of the 2011 Tandem flight — the thing they have actually done.

So Why Cover It At All

Because the distinction matters, and it is getting harder to see.

Rendered aerospace concepts now circulate faster and look better than photographs of real hardware. A well-lit animation of a wing separating from an airship is indistinguishable, at a glance, from footage of a Talon-A dropping off Roc. One of those things has flown ten times. The other has never existed outside a computer.

JP Aerospace has been open about that for twenty-five years, which is more than can be said for some better-funded operations. They fly ping-pong balls full of schoolchildren’s experiments to 90,000 feet and they are honest that the orbital airship is a maybe. The reasonable response is to enjoy the picture, remember which column it belongs in, and go and look at what Stratolaunch is doing instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What is JP Aerospace’s Hazel?

Hazel is a concept vehicle shown in still images released by JP Aerospace in early September 2026, depicting a winged craft separating from a twin-balloon high-altitude airship called SuperTandem.
