It is a pressure vessel folded into a pack, connected to a bottle of compressed gas, and rigged to a girt bar that clips into the floor. When the door is &ldquo;armed&rdquo;, that girt bar is locked to the aircraft; open the door and the slide is dragged out of its housing, the bottle fires, and roughly two seconds later there is an inflated escape path lying on the tarmac.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the door is &ldquo;disarmed&rdquo;, the girt bar is stowed and the door opens with the slide still packed. Everything therefore depends on one action performed in the right order at the right moment. Arm the door before departure, disarm it before opening on arrival. The slide has to be removed, sent to a certified workshop, inspected, repacked and recertified, and the gas bottle recharged.
