The UAE carrier that used to fly to Algiers stopped months ago. The airspace being closed is airspace almost no Emirati aircraft was using.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Which is precisely what makes it interesting. This is aviation being used as diplomatic punctuation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px 24px;margin:26px 0;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF\">\r\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:17px;color:#222\">Quick Facts<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin:4px 0;font-size:15px;line-height:1.7\"><strong>What happened:<\/strong> Algeria closed its airspace to all civilian and military aircraft registered in the United Arab Emirates<br>\r\n<strong>Announced:<\/strong> by the Algerian Ministry of Defence on 10 September 2026<br>\r\n<strong>In force:<\/strong> from midnight on 11 September 2026<br>\r\n<strong>The exception:<\/strong> commercial civilian flights to and from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers, which the ministry said will continue until the end of 2026, when a contract it has not identified expires<br>\r\n<strong>The cause:<\/strong> Algeria severed diplomatic relations with the UAE on 10 September 2026<br>\r\n<strong>Practical effect:<\/strong> limited. Algeria moved to terminate the 2013 air services agreement in February 2026, and FlightAware data indicates the last Emirates service between Dubai and Algiers operated in March 2026<br>\r\n<strong>Other UAE carriers serving Algeria:<\/strong> none<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The airline had already gone<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The aviation part of this rupture did not begin this week. It began in February 2026, when the UAE&rsquo;s General Civil Aviation Authority was told that Algeria was terminating the air services agreement the two countries signed in 2013.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Air services agreements are the plumbing of international aviation: the bilateral treaties that decide who may fly where, how often, and with what. Cancel one and the flights stop, whatever the airlines would prefer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Emirates said at the time that its final scheduled departure from Algiers would be on 3 February 2027. In practice it appears to have gone earlier; FlightAware data indicates the last Dubai to Algiers service ran in March 2026. Its statement was pointed but did not set out specific incidents.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Given the increasing provocative or hostile actions emanating from the United Arab Emirates, Algeria has shown great self-restraint and a high sense of responsibility. It has not hesitated, out of a spirit of full respect for the principles governing relations between states, to make every effort to draw the attention of the Emirati side and warn it of the serious and unjustified consequences that could result from its regrettable conduct.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/strong> &mdash; statement announcing the severing of diplomatic relations, 10 September 2026<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These are Algiers&rsquo;s characterisations, not established facts, and the statement does not specify what the conduct was. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has previously said publicly that he regards the UAE as having had a negative effect in the region; the two states have been at odds for years over North Africa and the Sahel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Abu Dhabi&rsquo;s reply was conspicuously mild.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Hope that this decision will be temporary, in a manner that preserves the fraternal ties between the two brotherly peoples.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>United Arab Emirates<\/strong> &mdash; official response to Algeria&rsquo;s decision<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why airspace is the tool of choice<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Closing airspace has become one of the standard instruments of modern statecraft, because it is immediate, highly visible, costs the closing state very little, and requires no one else&rsquo;s agreement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The template is Russia in 2022. When European carriers were shut out of Russian airspace, flights between Europe and East Asia grew by hours, fuel burn rose, and airlines from countries that retained access gained a structural cost advantage they still hold. Analysts generally expect those restrictions to run to 2027 or 2028 at least.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Algeria&rsquo;s closure is nothing like that in scale. Algeria sits on some routes between Europe and West Africa, but UAE-registered traffic through that corridor is thin, and the airlines most affected by a Gulf-to-West-Africa routing question are not Emirati.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The genuinely notable clause is the exception. Commercial flights into Algiers are allowed to continue until the end of 2026 because of a contract Algerian authorities have declined to name. A government willing to expel an ambassador in 48 hours and shut its sky nonetheless carved out a commercial arrangement it did not want to break.
